TTC installing new elevator at St Patrick Station, starting April 1

This video, featuring the TTC’s chief executive officer, Andy Byford and its executive director of corporate communications, Brad Ross, explains the upcoming construction at St Patrick Station and other aspects of the Easier Access Program.

This Saturday, April 1, TTC contractors start building a new elevator to make St Patrick Station accessible, as part of the Easier Access Program. The work blocks the pedestrian crossing on the north side of Dundas Street West at University Avenue.

Although the City of Toronto is maintaining through traffic, work on the project also restricts median traffic lanes on University, north and south of Dundas West. The work zone for building the elevator shaft from the concourse level to the subway platform occupies the north island at the intersection.

During construction, pedestrians must cross University on the south side of the intersection. While the subway is open, pedestrians who are able may also cross underground through the subway station.

During the first week of construction, TTC customer service ambassadors will help pedestrians navigate the intersection.

The TTC is co-ordinating this project with a second project to build an elevator from street to concourse level. A private developer is building this second elevator, as part of a new development on the northwest corner.

At the end of the project, passengers will have new entrances to the station, a barrier-free path to all levels, accessible fare gates, better way-finding and security and new public art.

The TTC started preparing for construction at St Patrick Station in mid-February.

Crews generally work from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m.

The TTC is maintaining regular streetcar service along the 505 Dundas route, bus service along the 142 Downtown / Avenue Rd route and subway service along the 1 Yonge - University line during the project.

According to the TTC, the “Easier Access Program makes stations accessible for everyone with the addition of new elevators.”

Construction on the elevators at St Patrick Station continues until December 31, 2018.
