Wellington Street construction starts April 10;
may affect TTC services until September

Update — Thursday, August 10, 12:04 p.m.: The City announced today that construction ended Thursday, August 3 — 12 weeks earlier than schedule. The contractor used more crews after the City approved an extra cost of $280,000 from the contract contingency allowance. The TTC has not yet announced whether it is restoring regular service.

Update — Sunday, July 30, 2:37 p.m.: Starting Monday, July 31, the TTC again operates buses, instead of streetcars, along the 503 Kingston Rd route. It’s detouring the buses off Wellington during the construction.

Update — Wednesday, June 14, 5:34 p.m.: Starting Sunday, June 18, the TTC revises the path for buses operating along the 121 Fort York - Esplanade route, so that construction no longer affects service.

Update — Tuesday, June 6, 9:42 a.m.: The TTC is detouring buses operating along the 72B Pape via Commissioners and Queens Quay route all day, every day, starting Thursday, June 8.

Update — Monday, June 5, 10:57 a.m.: The City is closing the intersection of Wellington Street West with York Street from 7 p.m. Thursday, June 8 until 5 a.m. Thursday, June 15, as part of the project. North- and southbound traffic on York Street can’t operate through the intersection. One lane is available for westbound traffic on Wellington West, but motorists cannot turn from Wellington onto Yonge, Bay or York.

Update — Wednesday, May 31, 8:33 a.m.: The City is closing the intersection of Wellington Street West with Bay Street from 7 p.m. Thursday, June 1 until 5 a.m. Monday, June 5, as part of the project. The TTC is detouring buses operating along the 6 Bay and 72B Pape via Commissioners and Queens Quay routes.

Update — Wednesday, May 3, 7:34 a.m.: Starting Monday, May 8, the TTC resumes streetcar service along the 503 Kingston Rd route. It’s detouring the cars along King Street West to Spadina Avenue, instead of operating them along Wellington East and West.

Starting Monday, April 10, the City of Toronto is reducing traffic lanes on:

  • Wellington Street East between Church and Yonge Streets; and
  • Wellington Street West between York and Yonge Street

as contractors:

  • rebuild the 143-year-old water-mains;
  • remove two lanes of TTC streetcar tracks;
  • install one westbound track between York and Yonge Streets;
  • replace the sidewalk between York and Yonge Streets;
  • resurface the roadway between York and Yonge Streets; and
  • install new tree pits, guards and grates.

(Updated — Wednesday, June 14, 5:34 p.m.) Construction on Wellington Streets East and West affects service along the TTC’s 121 Fort York - Esplanade route until June 17. Expect delays as construction proceeds.

(Updated — Wednesday, May 3, 7:34 a.m. and Sunday, July 30, 2:37 p.m.) It also will affect service along the 503 Kingston Rd route. The TTC is currently operating buses, instead of streetcars, along the route, but starting Monday, May 8, the TTC again operates cars along the route. It is detouring the cars off Wellington to accommodate this project. Starting Monday, July 31, it is again operating buses along the route, but detouring the buses to accommodate the project.

The City plans to completely close two intersections for shorter periods while contractors rebuild the streetcar tracks:

  • Wellington Street West at Bay Street; and
  • Wellington Street West at York Street.

However, the City hasn’t yet determined exactly when it will close the intersections.

(Updated — Wednesday, May 31, 8:33 a.m.) The City is closing the intersection with Bay Street from 7 p.m. Thursday, June 1 until 5 a.m. Monday, June 5.

(Updated — Monday, June 5, 10:57 a.m.) The City is closing the intersection of Wellington Street West with York Street from 7 p.m. Thursday, June 8 until 5 a.m. Thursday, June 15.

According to a City news release, it’s starting this project “to improve water distribution, reduce the risk of water-main breaks and improve the quality of streetcar tracks in the area.”

The City says it’s “taking steps to minimize disruption to the public during the closure by extending work hours with some overnight and weekend work, as necessary, to reduce the duration of the project.”

It’s also adjusting the timing of signals on parallel routes to help manage traffic, while the street is closed.

Construction on Wellington continues until September 30.
