This weekend, crews are repairing leaks in the streetcar tunnel under Bay Street between Union Station and Queens Quay West.
From 1 a.m. Saturday, April 22 until 5 a.m. Monday, April 24, the TTC is closing the tunnel and detouring streetcars operating along these routes:
The TTC is replacing streetcars with buses along the entire 509 Harbourfront route. Shuttle buses also replace the 317 / 510 Spadina streetcar routes south of King Street West.
The crews work only in the streetcar tunnel, although they may generate some noise that you could hear at street level.
While the tunnel is closed, the crews are also heightening cautionary warnings on the streetcar right-of-way at York Street and on the ramp for motorists approaching the streetcar tunnel. They’ll add rumble strips on the concrete track allowance and lower the red beacon lights at the ramp.
During these projects, the crews are:
- drilling small holes into the concrete walls of the tunnel to insert injectors;
- using the injectors to insert grout through the holes and prevent water from leaking into the tunnel; and
- using a milling machine to create impressions or “rumble strips” on the ramp.
