Update — Friday, June 16, 3:40 p.m.: The City is starting a project to replace the sidewalks and install streetscaping on Queen Street West between Bathurst Street and Spadina Avenue, Monday, June 19.
TTC CLRV #4039 picks up passengers at Humber Loop for a long journey east to Neville Park. This shot was snapped by W.N. Carr in August 1984.
The TTC is replacing streetcars with buses along the entire 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen routes — between Neville Park and Long Branch loops — starting this Sunday, May 7.
By operating buses, instead of the cars, the TTC is accommodating several current and upcoming construction projects, including:
- renewing the tracks and overhead wiring on Lake Shore Boulevard West between Dwight Avenue (west of Royal York Road) and Humber Loop (already underway);
- renewing TTC tracks and overhead wiring on The Queensway between Humber Loop and Parkside Drive (already underway);
- rehabilitating The Queensway bridge over the Humber River (already underway);
- improving Humber Loop (already underway);
- replacing worn rail at **Queen Street West and Triller Avenue, Dunn Avenue and Dufferin Street;
- conducting preventative and corrective rail maintenance at **Queen Street West and Dufferin Street;
- conducting preventative and corrective rail maintenance at **Queen Street West and Shaw Street;
- rebuilding the sidewalks and installing “streetscaping” on Queen Street West between Bathurst Street and Spadina Avenue;
- upgrading the tracks, curves and switches at Queen Street West and McCaul Street;
- conducting preventative and corrective rail maintenance at **Queen Street East and Parliament Street;
- measuring noise and vibration at Queen Street East and Leslie Street;
- maintaining the rails at Queen Street East and Leslie Street;
- replacing the water-main at Queen Street East and Coxwell Avenue;
- upgrading the tracks, curves and switches at **Queen Street East and Coxwell Avenue; and
- repaving the roadway at **Queen Street East and Coxwell Avenue.
Another project likely to affect TTC service on Queen is the project to rebuild the pedestrian overpass linking the CF Eaton Centre with the Hudson’s Bay Queen Street store just west of Yonge Street.
Buses have already replaced the cars west of Roncesvalles Avenue for the Lake Shore West, Humber Loop and The Queensway projects since January 8.
Starting Sunday, the TTC operates buses on two shuttle routes:
- 301L / 501L Queen / Long Branch — between Neville Park and Long Branch loops; and
- 301P / 501P Queen / Park Lawn — between Neville Park and Park Lawn loops.
Buses serving both routes follow identical paths east of The Queensway and Windermere Avenue. Between Queensway / Windermere and Lake Shore Boulevard West / Park Lawn Road, buses serving the 301L / 501L route operate both ways along Windermere and Lake Shore Boulevard West. Buses serving the 501P route operate both ways along The Queensway and Park Lawn.
Saturday, May 6 is the last day that the TTC operates buses along the 501M shuttle route between Windermere and Marine Parade. (Buses on this route have partially replaced streetcars since Monday, January 3.) Saturday is also the last day that buses serving the 301L / 501L shuttle route operate along Dufferin Street, Springhurst Avenue and Fort Rouille Street or through Dufferin Gate Loop.
Buses continue to replace the cars at least until early September.
Since the TTC is not using streetcars for 301 / 501 Queen passengers, it can reassign the cars to other routes:
- resuming streetcar service along the 503 Kingston Rd route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours;
- operating streetcars only, instead of cars and some buses, along the 504 King route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours; and
- resuming streetcar service along the 511 Bathurst route every day at all times except overnight.
Buses continue to replace streetcars along the 502 Downtowner route, since some of these construction projects also disrupt service along that route.
