Dundas East / Parliament track construction:
TTC detours, starting May 15

Update — Friday, August 18, 10:47 a.m.: Construction has ended and TTC streetcars operating along the 505 Dundas route have resumed regular service between Bay and Church Streets.

Update — Saturday, June 3, 3:06 p.m.: Streetcars resume their regular route through Parliament Street tomorrow, Sunday, June 4 at 5 a.m. The cars resume their previous detour around the construction between Church and Yonge Streets.

Update — Tuesday, May 30, 5:46 p.m.: Construction ends tomorrow, Wednesday, May 31 and buses operating along the 65 Parliament and 365 Parliament overnight routes have resumed regular service.

TTC crews continue to upgrade the overhead wiring, so streetcars operating along the 505 Dundas route continue to detour until 5 a.m. Monday, **June 5. Shuttle buses also continue to replace the cars along sections of the regular route.

Starting Monday, May 15, the City of Toronto and the TTC are replacing the streetcar tracks at:

  • the intersection of Dundas Street East with Parliament Street.

To accommodate the work, the City is completely closing the intersection to all traffic for three weeks.

The TTC is detouring buses and streetcars operating along these routes, while the intersection is closed:

  • 65 Parliament;
  • 365 Parliament overnight; and
  • 505 Dundas.
  • 514 Cherry.

The TTC is currently detouring streetcars operating along the 505 Dundas route during another construction project on Dundas Street East between Church and Yonge Streets. To accommodate both projects, the streetcars follow a longer detour routing.

The TTC detours streetcars operating along the 514 Cherry route off Sumach and Cherry Streets late evenings and early mornings due to ongoing noise issues at King Street East and Sumach Street.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Broadview Avenue and Bay Street.

(Updated — Saturday, June 3, 3:06 p.m.) TTC track construction at Dundas East / Parliament and the detours continue until 5 a.m. June 5.

The first few days of a major track replacement project like this one are usually the most disruptive, while crews break and remove concrete in the streetcar right-of-way. However, crews stop working by 11 p.m.

When crews finish removing the concrete, they’ll start working on the rail. This phase of the project usually requires crew to work late evenings, overnight and weekends. Overnight, crews move rail into position, install new rail installation and then weld or grind the new rail. After-hours work support the daytime construction and allow the TTC to complete the project as quickly as possible.

The crews also temporarily store pre-assembled rail panels on flatbed trailers in the track allowance near the intersection:

  • on Dundas Street East, east of Regent Street and west of Poulette Street; and
  • on Parliament Street north of Callaghan Lane and south of Coatsworth Street.

Assembling the rail panels before the project helps speed up the process of installing the rails and, in turn, reduces overnight work.

The City is prohibiting on-street parking near the storage sites.

The TTC is also parking office trailers on Regent Street just south of Dundas Street East before the City shuts the intersection. It will remove the trailers at the end of the project.
