Lake Shore West streetcar infrastructure:
TTC starts construction, June 26

Starting Monday, June 26, the City of Toronto and the TTC proceed with a project to upgrade the streetcar infrastructure on

  • Lake Shore Boulevard West between Dwight Avenue and Humber Loop.

During this project, crews are:

  • replacing the streetcar tracks;
  • rebuilding the east- and westbound streetcar platforms east of Brookers Lane;
  • resurfacing the roadway;
  • improving the sidewalks;
  • modifying curbs to accommodate the TTC’s new low-floor, accessible Toronto Flexity streetcars and meet the guidelines of the provincial Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act; and
  • build a new two-way cycle track.

Crews start working at Dwight Avenue and proceed eastward along the track allowance. The City may restrict traffic in lanes beside each work zone.

The track work at Royal York and Park Lawn Roads requires the City to completely close the intersections, affecting other TTC services. The City and TTC will inform transit passengers about how these closures affect them closer to the dates.

For this project, crews typically work longer than usual hours — Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. — to complete the various infrastructure components as quickly as possible. They may also work weekends to make sure they keep the project on schedule.

When TTC crews start installing the new tracks, they also work late evenings and overnight.

To complete projects of this magnitude, the TTC manages with the contractor three scheduled shifts: day; afternoon; and night. This makes sure that the team completes the project in the shortest possible time to lessen impacts to nearby businesses and residents and to maintain the project schedule.

During this phase of the project, the crews:

  • move rail into position;
  • install and assemble the new rail installation; and
  • weld and grind the new rail.

After-hours TTC work supports daytime construction and reduces the amount of time for disrupting traffic and neighbourhoods.

Since Sunday, January 8, construction on Lake Shore Boulevard West and related construction in Humber Loop and on The Queensway has affected TTC services along the 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen routes.

Shuttle buses first replaced streetcars only west of Roncesvalles Avenue. Starting Sunday, May 7, they started replacing the cars along the entire Queen line. The buses operate along two routes:

  • 301L / 501L Queen / Long Branch shuttle, between Neville Park and Long Branch Loops; and
  • 301P / 501P Queen / Park Lawn shuttle, between Neville Park and Park Lawn Loops.

These buses do not operate through Humber Loop.

Construction on Lake Shore Boulevard West, in Humber Loop and on The Queensway and the TTC detours continue throughout 2017, or until December 31.

Rail construction on Lake Shore Boulevard West proceeds in two phases.

1. Dwight Avenue to Symons Street

Crews are replacing the rails and removing extra concrete, due to new rail-profile standards since the last time that the TTC installed track along this section of Lake Shore West. They started welding and storing rail on the tracks east of Islington Avenue in April.

2. Symons Street to Humber Loop

Crews are only replacing the rails, due to galvanic corrosion resulting in gaps in rail and episodes of arc-flashes. Crews started welding and storing rail on the track right-of-way east of Brookers Lane in late March. Crews will also rebuild the streetcar platforms at Brookers Lane.

The cycle path will extend along the south side of Lake Shore West between First Street and Norris Crescent to fill a gap in the Waterfront Trail. Curbs, bollards, planters and a low concrete wall physically separate the path from motor traffic. The City is not removing traffic lanes to accommodate the cycle track.
