The Region of Waterloo has approved new fares for Grand River Transit passengers, starting Canada Day, Saturday, July 1.
Cash fares for adult GRT passengers the same as currently, $3.25. The cost to buy a strip of five tickets increases by 50 cents to $13.80 for adults and by 45 cents to $12 for seniors and elementary- and secondary-school students.
The big changes are for those who use monthly passes. For adults, the price jumps by $4 to $86 and for seniors and students by $3 to $73. TRIP (transit for reduced income program) passengers pay an extra $1 or $43 monthly. U-Passes for students at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University go up by $4.25 to $89.45. Employees of companies that have enrolled in the Travel Wise program pay another $4.40 or $73.10 per month.
You’ll pay more for other passes, too. College students pay $292 for each four-month term, instead of $280. GRT will sell day passes for $8, instead of $7.75. The SunOne Summer pass that elementary- and high-school students may use for all of July and August is $123, instead of $118 for July and August.
GRT says the revenue for the higher fares will support upcoming major service changes from 2017 until 2021. You can learn more about these changes here.
