Starting Canada Day, Saturday, July 1 York Region Transit and Viva are no longer selling paper tickets and passes.
You can pay your YRT / Viva fare with a PRESTO farecard or through your smartphones with the new mobile payment app, YRT / Viva Pay. Starting July 1, the app is available for free download on iOS (version 8 and above) and Android (version 4.4 and above) mobile devices in the App Store or Google Play.
After you download the app onto your mobile device, create an account by signing in through Facebook or Google, or sign up with your email address.
To buy your mobile ticket / pass:
- Tap “Buy Tickets”, then select a fare product to buy;
- Tap “Purchase Tickets” to continue to the check-out; then
- Tap “Add a payment card” to add your payment information.
Once you’ve added a card to your account, select it to make a purchase. Your purchased ticket / pass will appear in the “Use Tickets” screen. Then you can select it to activate. You must activate your ticket before you use it to travel.
To activate your mobile ticket / pass:
- On the “Use Tickets” screen, choose the ticket or pass you wish to use;
- Tap the plus (+) or minus (-) symbol beside the fare type to add or remove it from the activation queue;
- Tap “Activate Tickets” to activate the mobile ticket or pass. Fare activation takes one full minute and you must finish activating your card before you board the bus. The timer at the bottom of the ticket screen will count down from one minute. When the one-minute count-down ends, the ticket / pass becomes active for two hours (tickets) or one month (passes);
- Your mobile ticket / pass becomes your proof of payment to ride YRT or Viva.
To use your mobile ticket / pass on the bus:
- Fare activation takes one full minute, but you must complete it before boarding the bus;
- When you board a YRT, Mobility Plus, Dial-a-Ride or TTC route in York Region, show the activated mobile ticket / pass to the driver. Tap the screen to show that the fare is valid. If you are on a TTC bus in Toronto that is travelling northbound into York Region, show the driver you activated mobile ticket/pass when you exit north of Steeles Avenue. Note that it takes one minute to activate, so be sure to activate your fare at least a minute in advance.
- When travelling on Viva, show the activated mobile ticket / pass to the enforcement officer upon request, if he or she asks you to. The officer may also ask to scan the barcode on your mobile ticket / pass to inspect it.
You can still pay your fare with cash.
You can still load a YRT / Viva monthly pass onto a PRESTO card and use it for unlimited travel each month. You can also buy and use a monthly pass through the YRT / Viva Pay app. The GTA Weekly Pass — allowing travel on the TTC, YRT / Viva, Brampton Transit and Miway — is still available for sale at fare sales agents. And, you can still buy Ride to GO fares using PRESTO or exact cash fare on YRT routes. However, ticket vending machines at terminals and vivastations no longer sell Ride to GO tickets as of July 1.
If you ride TTC buses in York Region, don’t use PRESTO — for now. Continue using paper tickets or passes, the GTA Weekly Pass or the new YRT / Viva Pay app.
PRESTO does not yet offer a way to pay both TTC and YRT/Viva fare with a PRESTO card. TTC is working with PRESTO on a solution, which YRT and Viva will announce when it’s available.
If you use TTC in York Region, you may continue to buy YRT / Viva paper tickets and monthly passes at fare media agents in Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham and Toronto. All fare media agents that previously sold the GTA Weekly Pass continue to do so.
You can still buy 10-pack tickets and monthly passes at all multiRide ticket vending machines, except for the one at Newmarket GO Bus Terminal.
YRT vehicles serving Dial-a-Ride routes 10, 40, 41, 52 and 58 currently do not accept PRESTO or the Pay app.
If you use these services from Saturday, July 1 until Monday, July 31, continue paying your fare with paper tickets and monthly passes or exact cash.
Starting Tuesday, August 1, you can use all forms of payment on all YRT Dial-a-Ride vehicles.
YRT and Viva continue to accept paper tickets until December 31.
You can load the value of a two-zone fare ticket onto a PRESTO card at the YRT / Viva head office, 50 High Tech Road, 5th floor, Richmond Hill, Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Starting Canada Day, Saturday, July 1, YRT is also eliminating fare zones and raising fares.
