Shuttle buses no longer operate along the east end of the route. Buses continue to operate along the 306 Carlton night route due to ongoing construction on College Street in the west end of the route.
Update — Tuesday, July 18, 10:32 a.m.: The projects on Coxwell Avenue and on Gerrard Street East at Kingsmount Road have ended.
Sunday, July 9, the TTC ends its various infrastructure upgrade projects on Gerrard Street East between Parliament Street and Coxwell Avenue. Streetcars again operate along Gerrard East west of Coxwell Avenue.
That same day at 5 a.m., the TTC starts three more streetcar infrastructure projects east of Coxwell Avenue:
- upgrading the overhead wiring on Gerrard Street East between Main Street and Coxwell Avenue;
- replacing the rail at the westbound stop on Gerrard Street East at Kingsmount Park Road; and
- repairing the track area on Coxwell Avenue between [upper] Gerrard Street East / Fairford Avenue and Eastwood Road / [lower] Gerrard Street East;
The projects require the TTC to revise services along these routes:
Shuttle buses replace the cars between Main Street Station and Coxwell Avenue.
(Updated — Thursday, July 27, 5:18 p.m.) Infrastructure upgrades on Gerrard Street East and Coxwell Avenue — and the TTC detour — continue until July 30 26.
The TTC continues to detour streetcars in the west end of the 506 Carlton route during construction on College Street. Shuttle buses operate between Lansdowne and Spadina Avenues.
Between Main Street and Coxwell Avenue
Crews are installing new trolley wire to prepare for operating the TTC’s new accessible Toronto Flexity cars along this part of the street in the future.
(Updated — Thursday, July 27, 5:18 p.m.) From Sunday, July 9 until Saturday, July
2926, TTC staff work from 1 until 5 a.m. each night to complete this overhead work as safely and with as little impact to traffic as possible, starting at Coxwell Avenue and progressing eastward.The crews use two to four overhead trucks with hydraulic equipment. You may hear beeping sounds from back-up alarms on the TTC trucks or notice bright equipment lights.
The crews may block the centre traffic lanes while they work, but most traffic can continue through the work zones.
Kingsmount Park Road
During this project, TTC track crews are replacing worn rail at the westbound streetcar stop.
Starting Monday, July 10, the crews generally work from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. each day, but may occasionally work overnight “to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete” and to complete the project as quickly as possible.
- Step 1: The track crew starts milling the concrete from the track area to expose the old rail. They also welding and grind the new rail during the day.
- Step 2: They remove the old rail and install, weld and grind new rail installed. They place concrete in the track area.
- Step 3: They allow the new concrete to cure before they remove the work zone and all traffic can resume along this part of the roadway.
Regular traffic can continue in both directions along the curb lanes through the work area. The City of Toronto is prohibiting parking near Kingsmount Park Road to maintain a safe work zone for the crew.
Coxwell Avenue
During this project, TTC crews are returning the concrete margin areas of the tracks to a state of good repair for all road users. They’re breaking and chipping the concrete to complete the work.
Crews set up a work zone in the streetcar allowance around 7 a.m. Sunday, July 9. They occupy the streetcar track allowance to conduct the repairs until they complete the project.
Regular traffic can continue in both directions along the curb lanes through the work areas. The City of Toronto is prohibiting parking on Coxwell Avenue and restricting some turns to maintain a safe work zone for the crew.
During this project, crews break the old concrete and install new concrete. They’re mostly removing the old concrete between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. each day. After they finish removing the old concrete, they place the new concrete and leave it overnight to cure.
Traffic continues to move along the street only in the curb lanes for about 24 hours after the crew installs the new concrete. After the concrete has cured, they remove the work zone and all traffic can resume along the track area.
