The City of Toronto is replacing the 100-year-old water-main at the intersection of
- Queen Street East with Coxwell Avenue.
Working with the TTC, the contractor is also replacing the streetcar tracks and concrete in the intersection.
Phase 1 - Replacing the water-main
Monday, July 31 until Labour Day, Sunday, September 4, the City is restricting traffic to just one lane in each direction on Queen East. It’s closing all but one southbound lane on Coxwell from just north of Queen East to Eastern Avenue.
Phase 2 - Replacing the TTC tracks
Tuesday, September 5 until Friday, September 29, the City is closing the entire intersection to traffic.
Phase 3 - Restoring and repaving the roadways
Saturday, September 30 until Friday, October 13, the City is restricting traffic to just one lane in each direction on Queen East and Coxwell.
The City is already replacing streetcars with buses along these routes:
- 301 Queen overnight;
- 501 Queen; and
- 502 Downtowner.
During phase 1, the buses continue to operate along their regular routes, but passengers should expect delays through the work zone. (Expect the TTC to detour these services during phase 2.)
However, the TTC is revising services along these routes during phase 1:
Crews are:
- removing asphalt from the roadway and digging a trench to install the new water-main;
- replacing City-owned water service pipes that do not meet City standards between the water-main and private property lines;
- removing and replacing the TTC tracks and the concrete in the track area in the intersection; and
- rebuilding sidewalks, resurfacing the roadway and restoring all areas that construction had disturbed.
During phases 1 and 3, crews work Mondays to Fridays from about 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. They may also work weekends to keep the project on schedule and to reduce the amount of time that the project disrupts the neighbourhood.
During phase 2, crews work seven days a week, usually from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., but they will be working overnight when they install the new rail. They’ll stop breaking and removing concrete and other noisy activities by 11 p.m.

Mondays to Fridays before about 7 p.m., starting Monday, July 31, southbound buses operate along their regular route to Coxwell Avenue and Dundas Street East, then detour:
eastward along Dundas East; and then
southwestward along Kingston Road and Eastern Avenue to just south of Queen Street East,
ending their trips.Southbound buses skip their regular stops

Instead, southbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops
- on Dundas Street East east of Coxwell Avenue and at Kingston Road.
Northbound buses start their trips on Eastern Avenue south of Queen Street East, then proceed:
south- and westward along Eastern;
northward along the “Eastern Avenue Cutoff” (meaning: the former roadway of Eastern Avenue, before the City of Toronto connected it with Kingston Road);
eastward along Queen Street East;
northeastward along Kingston Road; and then
westward along Dundas Street East to Coxwell Avenue,
resuming their regular route northward along Coxwell.Northbound buses skip their regular stops

Mondays to Fridays before about 5:30 a.m. and after about 7 p.m. and all day Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, starting Monday, July 31, south- and eastbound buses operate along their regular route to Coxwell Avenue and Dundas Street East, then detour:
eastward along Dundas East; and then
southwestward along Kingston Road and Eastern Avenue; and then
northward along the “Eastern Avenue Cutoff” toQueen Street East,

Mondays to Fridays during rush hours, starting Monday, July 31, the TTC again replaces streetcars with buses along the route.
During ongoing construction on Wellington Streets East and West, the TTC also revises the path so that buses operate along different streets in downtown Toronto than the streetcars usually do.
Westbound buses operate along the regular 503 route to King Street East and Church Street, then detour:
westward along King East and West; and then
northward along York Street to Adelaide Street West,

- on Wellington Street West at York Street.
Instead, westbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

Eastbound buses start their trips on York Street at Adelaide Street West, then proceed:
northward along York;
westward along Richmond Street West;
southward along University Avenue; and then
eastward along King Street West to York,

- on York Street at King Street West.
Buses likely continue to operate along the route and along the temporary path until October 13.
