August 7 holiday service

You may call it Civic Holiday or, if you’re a Torontonian. Simcoe Day. People in Hamilton call it “George Hamilton Day”, in Peterborough it’s “Peter Robinson Day” and, if you live in Guelph, you may even refer to it as “John Galt Day”.

(Maybe we could just call it “Founders’ Day” — except Oakville dubs it “Emancipation Day” to commemorate August 1, 1834, the day slavery was abolished in Canada and throughout the British Empire. Oakville’s Emancipation Day dates back to 1850, when African Canadians would gather at George’s Square to honour their journey to freedom in Canada.)

Whatever you call it, you’re probably getting a holiday this Monday, August 7.
