From Tuesday, October 10 until Sunday, October 15, TTC track crews are replacing the rail at two streetcar stops on Queen Street East — the westbound stop at Pape Avenue and the eastbound stop at Empire Avenue. Crews work at both sites at the same time.
(Track crews will replace the rail at the westbound stop at Carlaw Avenue later).
The TTC is detouring streetcars operating along this route, while work proceeds:
Shuttle buses continue to operate through both work zones, but the TTC is extending the path for buses operating along this route:
- 301R/501R Queen shuttle.
Crews complete early concrete saw-cutting at all three stops Friday, October 6 before they start working at Pape and Empire.
Starting 5 a.m. Tuesday, October 10, they’ll block the centre lanes in each direction through both work zones. The City of Toronto is restricting on-street parking near both work zones so that crews can work safely.
Crews generally work on projects of this nature “around-the-clock” to reduce the amount of time for blocking traffic, diverting transit services and disturbing the nearby community.
By about 7 a.m. Tuesday, a track crew starts using a milling machine to remove most of the concrete in the track area near the streetcar stops. Crews then chip the remaining concrete to completely expose the rails. Other crews deliver new, previously welded strings of rail to the work area so the track crews can get ready to install it at the stops. They store the new rail in the centre-lane track allowance until they can install it.
Then the crews replace the old rail with the new rail, requiring them to cut, weld and grind the rail. Finally, they place new concrete in the track area and leave it to cure. After the concrete cures, motorists can again drive in all lanes of the roadway.

northward along Broadview;
westward along Dundas Street East; and then
southward along Parliament Street to Queen East,

- on Queen Street East at Greenwood and Alton Avenues, Jones, Brooklyn, Pape, Carlaw and Logan Avenues, west of Booth Avenue, at Boulton and Broadview Avenues and Carroll, River, Sumach, Sackville and Parliament Streets.
Instead, westbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops
- on Queen Street East [eastbound] at Broadview Avenue,
- on Broadview Avenue at Dundas Street East,
- on Dundas Street East at Munro, River, Sumach, Sackville and Parliament Streets and
- on Parliament Street at Shuter Street and Queen Street East.
Eastbound cars operate along their regular route to Queen Street East at Broadview Avenue,

- on Queen Street East at Saulter Street, Empire, Logan, Carlaw, Pape and Caroline Avenues, across from Jones Avenue, at Leslie and Laing Streets, across from Greenwood Avenue and at Connaught Avenue.
