Update — Friday, October 27, 12:34 p.m.: Construction ends and regular streetcar service along the 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen routes resumes 5 a.m. Monday, October 30. The TTC no longer operates buses along the 301J / 501J Queen / Jarvis shuttle route. Buses operating along the 301L Queen / Long Branch overnight shuttle route again operate to and from Dufferin Gate Loop, instead of Queen Street East / Victoria Street.
Sunday, October 15, City of Toronto and TTC contractors start a project to replace the streetcar tracks and sidewalks at the intersection of
- Queen Street West with McCaul Street.
This project brings the track infrastructure to a state-of-good-repair and improves the sidewalks to comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
The TTC is detouring streetcars operating along these routes, while the intersection is closed:
Buses operating along the temporary 501J Queen / Jarvis route replace streetcars along regular the 501 Queen route between Spadina Avenue and Church Streets.
The TTC is extending the path for buses operating along the temporary 301L Queen / Long Branch overnight route. Starting early Monday, October 16, the buses drop off or pick up passengers as far east as Victoria Street, instead of operating to and from Dufferin Gate Loop.
(Updated — Friday, October 27, 12:34 p.m.) Crews work in two phases at the intersection of Queen West with McCaul.
- Phase 1: from 5 a.m. Sunday, October 15 until 5 a.m. Monday, October 16: Crews start setting up a work zone in the centre lanes of Queen Street West. The TTC starts detouring streetcars. Buses operate through the intersection.
- Phase 2: from 5 a.m. Monday, October 16 until 5 a.m.

The TTC continues to replace streetcars with buses west of Roncesvalles Avenue due to ongoing construction on Lake Shore Boulevard West and The Queensway and in Humber Loop.
Buses operating along the temporary 501L Queen / Long Branch shuttle route continue to drop off or pick up passengers between Long Branch and Dufferin Gate loops.
Buses operating along the temporary 501M Queen / Marine Parade route continue to drop off or pick up passengers between Park Lawn Road and Windermere Avenue.
Track work on Queen Street East at Coxwell, Pape and Empire Avenues ends 5 a.m. Sunday, October 15. Streetcars resume regular service in east-end Toronto.
Buses no longer operate along the temporary 301R / 501R Queen / River shuttle route.
(Updated — Friday, October 27, 12:34 p.m.) The City of Toronto is closing:
- McCaul Street between Renfrew Place to Queen Street West and
- Queen Street West between John and St. Patrick Streets
to all traffic from Monday, October 16 to until Monday, November 6 Monday, October 30. Motorists can only gain local access to the limits of the work zone.
The city is maintaining access to sidewalks at the intersection, although crews may occasionally barricade the walks with fences, when they install new concrete. During those occasional closures, pedestrians and cyclists must walk a short distance around the intersection.
During the first few days of the track work, crews break and remove concrete from the streetcar tracks until about 11 p.m.
Afterwards, they start installing the new rail. This part of the project requires the crews to work late evenings, overnight and weekends. Overnight, they move rail into position, install new rail and weld and grind the new rail. After-hours work supports daytime construction activity and helps make sure crews complete the project as quickly as possible. Rail Delivery
Other TTC crews pre-assemble rail panels, load them on flat-deck trailers and deliver the trailers to the work site from 6 a.m. until midnight during the first week of construction. They’ll temporarily store the trailers in the track allowance near the work area. By pre-assembling the rail panels, the TTC can speed up the process of installing the new track, reducing the amount of overnight work.
Crews park the trailers each of the northern, eastern and western work limits:
- Two trailers on Queen Street West east of University Avenue;
- Two trailers on McCaul Street north of Renfrew Place; and
- Two trailers on Queen Street West west of John Street.
They’re locating staff trailers on Duncan Street just north of Richmond Street West.
