In July 2016, City of Toronto council endorsed a transit plan that included extending the TTC’s Line 2 Bloor - Danforth subway to Scarborough Centre and the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line to the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus.
According to the City, “The Eglinton East LRT is more than a transit project, it is Scarborough’s transit corridor, connecting people and places on Eglinton Ave, Kingston Road and Morningside. The LRT will support sustainable, economically vibrant and complete communities along the LRT route along with the opportunity to create an attractive and welcoming public realm.”
The LRT would, the City says, improve local transit access to more than 40,000 residents who live in walking distance of the corridor. It brings rapid transit to five Neighbourhood Improvement Areas and two post-secondary campuses — U of T and Centennial College’s Morningside Campus.

In 2009, Ontario’s Minister of the Environment approved an environmental assessment by the City and the TTC for the Scarborough Malvern LRT — part of the ill-fated scheme to build the Transit City network of light rail transit lines. That earlier project would have extended along much the same route, although the new line would follow a different path through the university campus.
Now the City is re-examining the project to complete more planning and design work to bring the future LRT line closer to reality. It’s focussing on:
- integrating the Eglinton East line with the Eglinton - Crosstown LRT;
- extending the LRT further north to Sheppard Avenue;
- co-ordinating planning the LRT with the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus Secondary Plan;
- planning how traffic moves along the corridor once the LRT is operating; and
- determining requirements for maintaining and storing LRT vehicles.
