Christkindl Market in downtown Kitchener:
GRT detours, December 5 to 12



The City of Kitchener is closing:

  • King Street West between Water and Gaukel Streets

from Tuesday, December 5 until Tuesday December 12 to accommodate the organizers of the annual Christkindl Market as they set up the event, during the event and as they dismantle the event.

Grand River Transit is detouring buses operating along these routes, while the street is closed:

  • 1 Queen - River;
  • 4 Glasgow;
  • 6 Bridge;
  • 7 Mainline; and
  • 34 Bingemans.

34 Bingemans

From Tuesday, December 5 until Friday, December 8, Monday, December 11 and Tuesday, December 12, inbound buses operate along their regular route to King Street West and Francis Street, then detour:

southward along Francis South; and then
eastward along Charles Street West to Gaukel Street,
resuming their regular route southward along Gaukel.

Inbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on King Street West at Water Street South and Gaukel Street.

Outbound buses reverse the inbound detour routing.

Outbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on King Street West west of College Street and at Francis Street North.

Instead, outbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at a temporary stop

  • on Charles Street West west of Water Street South.

6 Bridge

From Tuesday, December 5 until Tuesday December 12, inbound buses operate along their regular route to King Street West and Francis Street, then detour:

southward along Francis South; and then
eastward along Charles Street West to Gaukel Street,
resuming their regular route southward along Gaukel.

Inbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on King Street West at Water Street South and Gaukel Street.

Outbound buses reverse the inbound detour routing.

Outbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on King Street West west of College Street and at Francis Street North.

Instead, outbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at a temporary stop

  • on Charles Street West west of Water Street South.
4 Glasgow

From Tuesday, December 5 until Saturday, December 9, Monday, December 11 and Tuesday, December 12, inbound buses operate along their regular route to Frederick Street and King Street East, then detour:

southward along Benton Street; and then
westward along Charles Streets East and West to Gaukel Street,
resuming their regular route southward along Gaukel.

Inbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on King Street East at Queen Street North and
  • on King Street West west of Ontario Street North.

Instead, inbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at a temporary stop

  • on Benton Street at Charles Street East.

Outbound buses operate along their regular route.

7 Mainline

From Tuesday, December 5 until Tuesday December 12, buses heading toward Fairview Park Mall operate along their regular route to King Street West and Francis Street, then detour:

southward along Francis South; and then
eastward along Charles Street West to Gaukel Street,
resuming their regular route southward along Gaukel.

Fairview-bound buses skip their regular stops

  • on King Street West at Water Street South and Gaukel Street.

Buses heading toward Waterloo operate along their regular route to King Street East and Frederick Street / Benton Street, then detour:

southward along Benton;
westward along Charles Streets East and West;
southward along Gaukel Street;
eastward through Charles Street Terminal, turning around in the terminal, then proceeding
northward along Gaukel;
westward along Charles West; and then
northward along Francis Street South to King West,
resuming their regular route westward along King.

Waterloo-bound buses skip their regular stops

  • on King Street East at Queen Street North and
  • on King Street West west of Ontario Street North and College Street and at Francis Street North.

Instead, Waterloo-bound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Benton Street at Charles Street East and
  • on Charles Street West west of Water Street South.
1 Queen - River

Inbound buses (headed toward Stanley Park Mall) operate along their regular route.

From Tuesday, December 5 until Tuesday December 12, outbound buses (headed toward The Boardwalk) operate along their regular route to Frederick Street and King Street East, then detour:

southward along Benton Street; and then
westward along Charles Streets East and West to Gaukel Street,
resuming their regular route southward along Gaukel.

Outbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on King Street East at Queen Street North and
  • on King Street West west of Ontario Street North.

Instead, outbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at a temporary stop

  • on Benton Street at Charles Street East.
