After slightly more than eight years of construction — the official ground-breaking took place November 27, 2009 — the TTC is opening the extension to the Line 1 Yonge - University line this Sunday, December 17.
Starting 8 a.m., trains start dropping off and picking up passengers at six new subway station — two of them beyond the City of Toronto limits in Vaughan. The new stations result in an extensive update of the TTC’s bus-route network, more commuter parking and more connections to transit services outside the city of Toronto. York Region Transit and Brampton Transit are also rearranging bus routes to carry passenger to and from the new station. GO Transit trains and buses connect with the new part of the TTC subway network, starting Saturday, December 30.
You won’t have to pay an extra fare if you ride the subway across the city limits. You only need to pay more if you transfer from the TTC at those stations to other transit agencies, much as you would if you transferred to other transit agencies at stations within the City of Toronto, like Islington, Don Mills, Finch and Sheppard West.
The extension adds about 13 minutes to the full ride time on Line 1 between Finch and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Stations — for a total ride time of 79 minutes. According to the TTC, the 8.6-kilometre (5.34-mile) Line 1 extension features a state-of-the-art signalling system and six, modern, bright, fully accessible stations all equipped with Wi-Fi, cell, the TTC’s new fare gates with PRESTO and dedicated bicycle parking.
Toronto Mayor John Tory and the chair of the Toronto Transit Commission, Josh Colle are boarding the first northbound train leaving Sheppard West Station at 8 a.m. Sunday. Ontario Transportation Minister, Steven Del Duca joins them at Pioneer Village Station, which straddles the border between Toronto and York Region. Minister Del Duca will begin his journey on the first southbound train from Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station.
The TTC continues to suspend service along this route due to Metrolinx construction of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line:
- 103 Mt Pleasant North.
The TTC is revising service along these routes: Line 1 Yonge - University subway; 35 Jane; 36 Finch West; 41 Keele local; 41E Keele express; 60 Steeles West local; 60E Steeles West express; 60F Steeles West express; 84 Sheppard West; 101 Downsview Park, 105 Dufferin North; 106 Sentinel, 106 York University; 107 St Regis; 107 Keele North; 108 Driftwood; 108 Downsview; 117 Alness - Chesswood; 117 Alness; 165 Weston Rd North; 195 Jane rocket; 196 York University rocket; 199 Finch rocket; 335 Jane overnight; 336 Finch West overnight; 341 Keele overnight; 353 Steeles overnight.
