The TTC continues upgrading the infrastructure at Main Street Station this spring and summer. And, the City of Toronto is starting a project to resurface Main Street between Gerrard Street East and Kingston Road.
Contractors started working on the station project Monday, April 23. Sunday, May 13, the TTC closed the station terminal to all buses to facilitate the project.
During the first phase of the project, the City closed Main Street to northbound traffic between Doncaster and Danforth Avenues to accommodate ongoing Hydro One work on the street. The TTC detoured buses or revised service along these routes:
- 20 Cliffside;
- 23 Dawes;
- 62 Mortimer;
- 64 Main;
- 87 Cosburn;
- 113 Danforth;
- 135 Gerrard;
- 300 Bloor - Danforth overnight;
- 306 Carlton overnight;
- 506 Carlton.
The first phase of the project at Main Street Station and the first version of TTC detours continued until Victoria Day, Monday, May 21. During the next phase, starting Tuesday, May 22, the City closed Main Street beside the station to all traffic so that the TTC could replace the track. The TTC also revised some of the detour routings that day. Starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC further revises the detours to to improve service to passengers and to accommodate construction on Main south of Gerrard East.
The entire project continues until September 3.
During TTC construction at the station, contractors are:
- replacing the roof;
- rehabilitating sections of the bus roadway and platforms;
- improving lighting;
- relocating the walkway;
- replacing the streetcar tracks; and
- installing new overhead streetcar wiring.
Starting Tuesday, May 22, the City closed Main Street beside Main Street Station to all traffic and TTC crews started replacing the tracks there.
They’re working “around-the-clock” to maintain the quality when installing new rail and concrete. Most of the track work takes place from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. and involves overnight activities, including rail installation and concrete pouring. They’ll replace old rail with the new rail, which requires them to cut, weld and grind the rail.
Starting Monday, July 23, TTC overhead crews are installing new streetcar overhead infrastructure on Main Street between Danforth Avenue and Main Street Station. Upgrading the overhead wiring is necessary for the TTC to operate its low-floor, accessible Toronto Flexity streetcars. (Streetcars return to Main Street Station in September.)
To complete this overhead work on Main Street as safely and with little impact on traffic, TTC crews work each night from 1 until 5 a.m.
Ususally, crews use two TTC overhead trucks with hydraulic equipment to work. You may hear beeping sounds from back-up alarms on the trucks and notice bright equipment lights.
Traffic will continue to flow through the Danforth Avenue / Main Street intersection, although the work zone may block traffic from some lanes.
All bus routes continue to operate through the area along their usual detour routes.
During City construction on Main Street between Gerrard Street East and Kingston Road, starting Monday, June 25, contractors are:
- replacing broken curbs and sidewalks;
- resurfacing Main Street between Gerrard Street East to Kingston Road;
- removing old asphalt and installing new asphalt on Main Street between Gerrard Street East to Kingston Road;
- realigning the intersections of Main Street with Benlamond Avenue and Kingston Road;
- extending the curbs on Main Street Benlamond and Swanwick Avenues and Kingston Road;
- installing new pedestrian crossovers at Benlamond and Swanwick Avenues; and
- installing / relocating hydro poles and traffic signal equipment at Main Street and Kingston Road.
Mondays to Fridays, one lane in each direction will be available to motorists. The City intends to close parts of the street so that just one lane is available for southbound traffic some weekends, while it extends the curbs at Benlamond and Swanick Avenues. The TTC will detour northbound buses along the 64 Main route during this work.
300 Bloor - Danforth overnight
Starting Sunday, May 13, the TTC is closing its stop westbound on Danforth Avenue at Main Street. Instead, buses drop off or pick up passengers at a temporary stop on Danforth west of Main.
Eastbound buses continue to drop off or pick up passengers at their regular stop on Danforth east of Main.
506 Carlton
Starting Sunday, May 13, the TTC extends the path so that buses operate to and from Victoria Park Station, instead of Main Street Station.
Westbound buses start their trips in Victoria Park Station, then proceed:
southward along Victoria Park Avenue; and then
westward along Gerrard Street East to Main Street,
resuming their regular route westward along Gerrard East.Westbound buses skip their regular stops
- in Main Street Station and
- on Main Street at Danforth Avenue and Gerrard Street East.

- on Gerrard Street East west of Victoria Park Avenue, at Dengate Road, across from Pickering Street and Malvern Avenue, at Ted Reeve Drive and at Main Street.
