Yonge Street rapidway - Richmond Hill:
Utility installation at South Hill Centre

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Yonge Street in Richmond Hill between 19th Avenue / Gamble Road and Highway 7.

From 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, July 30 and continuing daily, crews are installing a duct bank [a structure which gathers together and encases telecommunications cables] at the northernmost Yonge Street entrance to the South Hill Shopping Centre [9325 Yonge Street].

First, crews start working on the north side of the entrance just east of Yonge Street. Motorists can still access the plaza. However, the work zone restricts traffic to just one lane in each direction. Crews will steel-plate the work area, remove the work zone and allow traffic to flow on all lanes at the end of each day.

The work zone also temporarily blocks the sidewalks on the northeast corner of the intersection. Directional signs guide pedestrians to the nearest available walkway.

Due to the nature of this work, at times, expect construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks.

York Region Transit passengers aboard buses along this route should expect delays:

  • 589 Richmond Hill community bus.

Duct-bank installation at South Hill Shopping Centre and the resulting YRT delay continue for approximately two weeks, or until August 10.
