Dundas West / Lansdowne track upgrades:
TTC detours start September 2

Update — Saturday, September 28, 6:31 p.m.: The City is reopening Dundas West to traffic and buses resume service along the 505 Dundas route noon Monday, October 1. Construction and the remaining TTC detours continue “until mid-November”.

Starting 5 a.m. Sunday, September 2, the City of Toronto and the TTC are replacing the streetcar tracks, curves and switches

  • at the intersection of Dundas Street West with Lansdowne Avenue.

This is the second of three City / TTC projects to bring the tracks of the Lansdowne / Dundas West / College triangle to a state of good repair. The City and TTC replaced the tracks at the intersection of College Street with Lansdowne from Tuesday, July 25 until Sunday, August 6, 2017.

The City is closing

  • Dundas Street West between College and Marguretta Streets and
  • Lansdowne Avenue between College Street and south of Dundas Street West

to all traffic starting 5 a.m. September 2.

The TTC is detouring buses along these routes, while the intersection is closed:

  • 47 Lansdowne;
  • 402 Parkdale community bus; and
  • 505 Dundas.

(Buses continue to replace streetcars along the 505 Dundas route due to this and other construction projects.)

(Updated — Saturday, September 28, 6:31 p.m.) Track-replacement at Dundas West / Lansdowne and the TTC detours continue until 6 a.m. October 5.

(Updated — Saturday, September 28, 6:31 p.m.) The City is reopening Dundas West to traffic noon Monday, October 1. Crews continue to work on Lansdowne Avenue and the remaining TTC detours continue “until mid-November”.

Crews are delivering new streetcar track and rail on flat-deck trailers overnight before they start working September 3.

During this project they will:

  • remove the concrete and old streetcar track;
  • place new concrete;
  • install new rail; and
  • restore the area after construction.

Crews work 24 hours a day, every day. The TTC says, “The first few days of the construction are the most disruptive and involve breaking and removing concrete. Concrete breaking will stop at 11 p.m. Removal of broken concrete, cleanup and construction related deliveries may continue past midnight.

“The rail installation phase of this project will involve periods of late evening and overnight work and extended weekend hours by TTC crews. Around-the-clock rail installation work is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete.”

Both the City’s contractor and TTC track crews are working on the project. By working overnight, the contractor and TTC also support daytime construction activities, reduce congestion, disrupt less traffic and shorten the project timeline so that regular transit service resumes as soon as possible.

TTC crews are also upgrading the overhead streetcar wiring. They’re working on the overhead before and after the project and may occasionally work overnight.
