Yonge Street rapidway - Richmond Hill:
Traffic shifts to west side, June 21

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Yonge Street in Richmond Hill between 19th Avenue / Gamble Road and Highway 7.

From 7 p.m. Friday, June 21 until 7 p.m. Saturday, June 22, crews are reconfiguring traffic lanes to shift traffic to

  • Yonge Street, west side, between May Avenue and Northern Heights Drive,

as part of ongoing work to widen the roadway.

The work zone restricts traffic on Yonge to just one lane in each direction. After crews finish paving the east side of Yonge, they’ll shift traffic onto the new lanes so they can start widening the roadway and installing storm sewers on the west side.

The work zone blocks left turns to or from side streets and driveways except for Scott Drive / Bantry Avenue and Carrville Road / 16th Avenue. Crews maintain access to all properties and businesses.

Traffic-control personnel and York Region Police officers will be on site to direct motorists and pedestrians safely around work zones, if necessary.

During construction, York Region Transit is temporarily closing its northbound stops on Yonge Street

  • at High Tech Road,
  • at Beresford Drive and
  • at Northern Heights Drive.

YRT passengers aboard buses along these routes can also expect delays:

  • Viva blue;
  • 1 Highway 7 (closed stop at High Tech Road only);
  • 98 / 99 **Yonge late-night; and
  • 99 Yonge.

GO Transit is likely also closing its stops at the same intersections. Passengers aboard buses along this route can also expect delays:

  • 61 Richmond Hill / Toronto.

Expect construction-related noise, vibration and dust from equipment and trucks.
