Highway 7 West rapidway - Concord / Thornhill: Curb, sidewalk construction at Atkinson

VivaNext - Thornhill - header.jpg

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue building a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Highway 7 West, Centre and Bathurst Streets between Dufferin and Yonge Streets.

Starting 7 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, crews are installing new curbs and sidewalks

  • on Bathurst Street at the intersection with Atkinson Avenue and New Westminster Drive,

near the site of the future Atkinson vivastation.

The work zone restricts southbound traffic on Bathurst to just one lane during this part of the project.

Crews work 24 hours a day in two phases:

  • from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily (daytime); and
  • from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. daily (overnight).

Metrolinx and vivaNext previously scheduled this work starting Wednesday, July 24.

Daytime phase:

  • Crews have set up work zones on the northwest, southwest and southeast corners of the intersection, blocking curb lanes.
  • The work zones restrict southbound traffic to just one lane north and south of New Westminster.
  • Crews temporarily shift the centre-lane median on Bathurst westward, beside the southbound curb-lane north and south of New Westminster.
  • Southbound traffic on Bathurst flows on the centre lanes south of New Westminster.
  • Traffic cones separate south- and northbound traffic on Bathurst south of New Westminster.
  • Two lanes are available for northbound traffic south of Atkinson.
  • Just one lane is available for northbound traffic just north of Atkinson — between the intersection and the driveway for #531 Atkinson. Two lanes are again available for northbound traffic beyond #531 Atkinson.
  • Just one lane is available for east- and westbound traffic on New Westminster just west of Bathurst.
  • Just one lane is available for eastbound traffic on Atkinson just east of Bathurst.

Overnight phase:

  • Crews have set up work zones on the northwest, southwest and southeast corners of the intersection, blocking curb lanes.
  • The work zones restrict southbound traffic to just one lane north and south of New Westminster.
  • Just one lane is available for westbound traffic on Atkinson just east of Bathurst.

Both phases

  • The centre-lane median continues to block left-turns from northbound Bathurst to westbound Westmount Boulevard. Westmount remains a “right-in, right out” street, meaning eastbound motorists can only turn right to southbound Bathurst and southbound motorists on Bathurst can only turn right to access westbound Westmount.
  • “Paid-duty” York Regional Police officers and traffic-control personnel will be on-site to direct traffic and pedestrians safely around work zones.
  • The TTC may temporarily relocate bus stops near work zones. Passengers aboard buses along this route can also expect delays:
  • 160 Bathurst North.
  • York Region Transit may temporarily relocate bus stops near work zones. Passengers aboard buses along these routes can also expect delays:
  • Viva orange;
  • 3 Thornhill;
  • 23 Thornhill Woods;
  • 88 Bathurst.

Curb and sidewalk construction near the site of the future Atkinson vivastation and the resulting TTC and YRT service changes continue until 7 a.m. August 12.
