Tuesday, September 3, the City of Toronto and the TTC start a project to replace the streetcar tracks and the streetcar overhead wiring
- at the intersection of Queen Street East with Kingston Road / Eastern Avenue
and in the TTC’s Woodbine Loop.
During this project to return the streetcar infrastructure and City’s roadway to a state of good repair, crews are:
- removing and replacing the entire TTC streetcar overhead wire infrastructure and track in the intersection;
- rebuilding the eastbound streetcar platform on the west side of the intersection;
- rebuilding the roadway median on the east side of the intersection;
- resurfacing the roadway; and
- improving the sidewalks.
Starting Sunday, September 1, the TTC is revising service along these routes before crews start working on the project:
Shuttle buses replace route 501 streetcars east of Russell Carhouse and add extra service along the route between River Street and Connaught Avenue. Shuttle buses also replace route 301 overnight streetcars east of Greenwood Avenue.
From Monday, September 3 until Saturday, September 7, work zones block traffic lanes at the intersection overnight.
Passengers aboard buses along these routes can expect delays:
- 22A Coxwell via Kingston Rd; and
- 322 Coxwell overnight.
(Updated — Friday, September 6, 5:04 p.m.) The City is closing the intersection to all vehicles from Saturday, September 7 Monday, September 9 “until early November” (or until about November 8), so that contractors can complete this work effectively. The TTC plans to detour buses around the construction zone, starting that day. A future Transit Toronto post will detail detour-routing information.
(Updated — Friday, September 6, 5:04 p.m.) Road closures starting Saturday, September 7 Monday, September 9.
Construction at the intersection and the TTC service changes continue until about November 30, although crews may continue working overnight until about December 31, possibly further delaying transit services.
Tuesday, September 3, TTC crews start working on the project before the City closes the intersection.
- From midnight until 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 3 and continuing overnight nightly until 6 a.m. Saturday, September 7, crews remove the old streetcar overhead infrastructure in the area.
- They’ll use two to three overhead trucks to work. Expect to hear beeping sounds when the trucks are backing up.
- You may also expect to see bright equipment lights overnight.
- From midnight until 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 3 and continuing overnight nightly until 6 a.m. Saturday, September 7, crews also deliver pre-assembled rail panels on flat-deck trailers to the site.
- They’ll store the rails on the tracks near the work zone. Crews park the trailers at each of the north, east and west work limits, blocking traffic lanes.
- By pre-assembling the rail panels, crews speed up the process of installing the new tracks, reducing overnight work.
