*Update — Sunday, November 24, 6:26 p.m.: The TTC restored streetcar service along the 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen routes east of Russell Carhouse today. Crews continue to upgrade the overhead wiring at the intersection until December 31.
Update — Saturday, October 26, 4:09 p.m.: The City reopens the intersection to traffic 5 a.m. Monday, October 28. The TTC is ending some detour routes and revising others.
Tuesday, September 3, the City of Toronto and the TTC started a project to replace the streetcar tracks and the streetcar overhead wiring
- at the intersection of Queen Street East with Kingston Road / Eastern Avenue
and in the TTC’s Woodbine Loop.
During this project to return the streetcar infrastructure and City’s roadway to a state of good repair, crews are:
- removing and replacing the entire TTC streetcar overhead wire infrastructure and track in the intersection;
- rebuilding the eastbound streetcar platform on the west side of the intersection;
- rebuilding the roadway median on the east side of the intersection;
- resurfacing the roadway; and
- improving the sidewalks.
The City is closing the intersection to all vehicles from Monday, September 9 “until early November” (or until about November 9), so that contractors can complete this work effectively. The TTC is also detouring buses around the construction zone, starting that day.
^ Road closures starting Monday, September 9.
Starting Sunday, September 1, the TTC revised service along these routes, before crews started working on the project:
Shuttle buses replaced the overnight and regular / daytime cars.
Starting Monday, September 9, the TTC detours buses around the construction zone along these routes:
- 22A Coxwell via Kingston Rd;
- 22B Coxwell;
- 143 Downtown / Beach express;
- 301R Queen overnight shuttle bus;
- 322 Coxwell overnight;
- 501R Queen shuttle bus; and
- 503 Kingston Rd.
Construction at the intersection and the TTC service changes continue until about November 30, although crews may continue working overnight until about December 31, possibly further delaying transit services.
From midnight until 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 3 and continuing overnight nightly until 6 a.m. Saturday, September 7, crews
- removed the old streetcar overhead infrastructure in the area; and
- delivered pre-assembled rail panels on flat-deck trailers to the site.
They’re storing the rails on the tracks near the work zone. Crews parked the trailers at each of the north, east and west work limits, blocking traffic lanes. By pre-assembling the rail panels, crews sped up the process of installing the new tracks, reducing overnight work.
