Queen East / River track repairs: TTC detours, November 1 to 4

From 8 p.m. Friday, November 1 until 5 a.m. Monday, November 4, TTC track crews are replacing worn track beside the eastbound streetcar stop

  • on Queen Street East at River Street.

The TTC is detouring streetcars along these routes, while the work zone blocks the tracks:

  • 301 Queen overnight; and
  • 501 Queen.

Shuttle buses replace streetcars between Broadview Avenue and Parliament Street. (The TTC is already replacing streetcars with shuttle buses due to another construction project on Queen Street East. For this project, it’s extending current shuttle-bus service west of Jones Avenue for route 301 shuttle buses and west of River Street for route 501 shuttle buses.)

Starting at about 8:30 a.m. Friday, November 1, a TTC track crew will occupy the westbound curb lane

  • on Queen Street East west of River Street

to weld new rail into longer strings and get ready to replace the rail at the streetcar stop.

Starting at approximately 8 p.m. Friday, November 1, crews set up a new work zone in the track area. The City of Toronto is temporarily restricting traffic on the north side of Queen Street East near the work zone, to maintain the flow of traffic in the curb lane. A track crew will work “around-the-clock” (24 hours a day) to complete the project on time.

Soon after the crews have set up the work zone, they’ll use a milling machine to remove most of the concrete in the track area. They then chip the remaining concrete chipping to completely expose the old rail. They then replace the old rail with new, pre-welded rail. This requires the crews to cut, weld and grind the rail. They then place concrete in the track area and set it to cure.

The new concrete requires curing time before the crews can remove the work zone so that regular traffic can resume by 5 a.m. Monday, November 4.
