Gerrard East / Sackville track repairs:
TTC detours, starting December 7

Starting 5 a.m. Thursday, December 5, TTC crews are repairing broken rails on the streetcar tracks

  • at the intersection of Gerrard Street East with Sackville Street.

Crews work only in the track area at the intersection to:

  • break and remove concrete to expose four broken rails;
  • replace the “old” rail with new pieces of rail; and
  • place new concrete.

The TTC is detouring streetcars along these routes, while the work zone blocks the tracks:

  • 306 Carlton overnight; and
  • 506 Carlton.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Broadview Avenue and Parliament Street.

Track repairs at Gerrard East / Sackville and the resulting TTC detours continue until 5 a.m. December 7.

The TTC says, “Rail work of this nature is required around-the-clock to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete and the timely resumption of streetcar service.”

Shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday morning the track crew sets up the work zone and starts some early activity on the project. They then excavate and chip the concrete to expose four rails they intend to replace. While replacing the old rail with the new rail, they’ll also cut, weld and grind the rails.

They’ll place new concrete in the track area and set it to cure. The new concrete requires curing time before the crew can remove the work zone so that all traffic can again flow over the track area by 5 a.m. Monday.
