Update — Wednesday, September 2, 10:46 p.m.: The TTC opened the elevators at Chester Station to passengers today.

The TTC is continuing its “Easier Access” program to install elevators in its subway stations, making the subway system accessible for everyone. The program supports the Government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The provincial legislation commits the TTC to achieving a barrier-free transit system by 2025.

It’s also building second exits from stations with just one exit to increase passenger safety during emergencies.

At Chester Station, TTC contractors are building an elevator and a second exit at the same time. Crews are progressing well on installing the elevator as part of the “Easier Access” and second-exit projects. To safely proceed with the next phase of activities, the crews must expand the work zone so that it blocks the walkway north of the station building “as early as” February 18.

Pedestrians must walk through the south end of the Toronto Parking Authority lot, while the walkway is blocked. Contractors are installing signs and lighting to guide pedestrians along the temporary walkway.

Construction blocks the walkway at Chester Station “until the end of the year” or until about December 31.

• Contractors have finished placing concrete in both elevator shafts.
• They continue installing elevator components in both shafts.
• They continue interior work at the concourse level.

Second Exit / Entrance - On schedule to open in 2021

• Contractors continue building new staircases connecting the second exit / entrance to the east- and westbound platforms.
• They’re water-proofing, installing rebar and forming the roof slab, walls and staircases.
• They continue building the second-exit structure foundations.
