As part of its program to maintain streetcar tracks in a state of good repair, TTC crews are grinding the rails on a number of sections of the streetcar network that have developed roughness. This work improves the condition and extends the life of the rail and provides a smoother streetcar operation through those areas.
From 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 17 until 5 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, crews are grinding the rails
- on King Street West between John and York Streets.
The TTC is detouring streetcars along these routes, while the crews are working:
- 304 King overnight; and
- 504A / 504B King.
Shuttle buses replace the cars between Spadina Avenue and Church Street.
Crews start operating the slow-moving rail-grinding unit about 9 p.m. and continue overnight until about 5 a.m. They use a street sweeper to clean the track area every day after grinding the rail. You may hear noise when the rail-grinder and street-sweeper are operating.
While crews only work on the streetcar tracks, the City of Toronto will restrict on-street parking through the work zone to maintain traffic flow.
Toronto Police Services officers will be on-site each night to help direct traffic at the intersections in the work zone.
