The TTC is continuing its “Easier Access” program to install elevators in its subway stations, making the subway system accessible for everyone. The program supports the Government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The provincial legislation commits the TTC to achieving a barrier-free transit system by 2025.

Since Thursday, August 1, 2019, TTC contractors have been working on a project to install new elevators at Keele Station.

They’re adding:

• A barrier-free path between the main entrance and the platform level of the station;
• Two elevators to access east- and westbound platforms;
• Automatic sliding station-entry doors;
• Better signs; and
• Closed-circuit television (CCTV) security cameras along the accessible pathway.

“Easier Access” construction at Keele Station continues “until 2021”, meaning as late as until December 31, 2021.

In 2020, much of the work will occur in the bus terminal at the station. To prepare for this phase of the project from 2:30 until about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, March 22, Wednesday, March 25, Friday, March 27 and Sunday, March 29, crews are delivering and installing steel on the north side of Keele Station in the bus loop. Early Sunday, March 29, crews also install fencing around the bus loop for the upcoming bus-loop closure. (The TTC is closing the loop to all buses that day).

Crews work early mornings for safety purposes and to decrease the impact to passengers. Expect construction-related noise as crews deliver and operate equipment and from back-up beepers as they reverse construction vehicles.

This work does not disrupt regular bus and subway service through Keele Station until Sunday, March 29, when the TTC closes the bus loop to all buses.
