Eglinton Crosstown LRT - Cedarvale: TTC closing bus terminal, March 29

Eglinton Crosstown header.jpg

Metrolinx contractors continue building the future Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line between Mount Dennis and Kennedy.

Starting Sunday, March 29, the TTC is closing the bus terminal at Eglinton West Station — the future Cedarvale LRT and subway station — to accommodate ongoing construction of the LRT.

To construct the LRT station roof, crews must open up the area in front of (south of) Eglinton West Station. The work zone blocks bus access to the terminal, although the station remains open to subway passengers.

In this video, Metrolinx’ Matt Llewellyn explains what’s happening during this phase of construction at the future Cedarvale Station / Eglinton West Station.

Since Saturday, March 14, crews have been building temporary covered bus platforms on the north and south sides of Eglinton Avenue West to maintain TTC bus service to and from Eglinton West Station. They work daily from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. until Saturday, March 28, installing hoarding and widening the sidewalk.

From about 11 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until 2 p.m. Sunday, March 29, crews will reconfigure the traffic lanes to accommodate the bus platforms and expand the work zone at Eglinton West Station to block bus access.

The bus loop closes 2 a.m. March 29. Afterwards, TTC buses drop off or pick up passengers at the temporary platforms:

  • on the south side of Eglinton West between Atlas and Winnett Avenues for eastbound buses; and
  • on the north side of Eglinton West between Fairleigh Crescent and Park Hill Road for westbound buses.

Each platform can accommodate as many as three buses at a time. The platforms are covered and crews are installing curbs to maintain passenger safety.

2020 - 03-29 - Cedarvale - Temporary bus platforms on Eglinton Avenue West.jpg

The temporary platforms restrict traffic on Eglinton between Atlas Avenue and Park Hill Road to just one lane in each direction Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. and all day Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Both lanes are available to all traffic during rush hours.

During this phase of the construction project, expect:

  • Overnight noise when the bus loop is closed and while traffic changes are implemented.
  • Longer construction hours for deep excavation and TTC underpinning works are currently underway and will continue during this phase of the project.

Also, expect delays when travelling through the intersection.

Closure of the bus terminal at Eglinton West Station and the resulting TTC changes continue “for approximately five (5) months” or until about September 5.

For transit riders

  • The TTC is significantly revising bus services in the area, while the terminal is closed, affecting buses along these routes:
  • 32A Eglinton West (to / from Renforth Station);
  • 32C Eglinton West (to / from Jane via Trethewey);
  • 32D Eglinton West (to / from Emmett);
  • 63A Ossington (to / from Eglinton West Stn);
  • 63B Ossington (to / from St. Clair);
  • 109B / 109C Ranee; and
  • 332 Eglinton West overnight.
  • The TTC is also introducing a new temporary route during this phase of the LRT construction project:
  • Since February, 2019, the TTC has detouring buses along this route, due to LRT construction at Eglinton West Station terminal:
  • 363 Ossington overnight.

2020 - 03-29 - Cedarvale - TTC service changes during temporary  bus-terminal closure at Eglinton West Station.png

  • Some buses that usually start and end their trips in Eglinton West Station are temporarily operating to and from Eglinton Station. This results in the TTC making minor changes to the paths for buses along these routes at the Eglinton Station terminal:
  • 51 Leslie; and
  • 56 Leaside.

2020 - 03-29 - TTC bus changes at Eglinton Station due to Eglinton West Station closure.jpg

  • Some buses drop off or pick up passengers at the temporary platforms:
  • on the south side of Eglinton West between Atlas and Winnett Avenues for eastbound buses; and
  • on the north side of Eglinton West between Fairleigh Crescent and Park Hill Road for westbound buses.
  • When transferring between Line 1 and buses boarding outside Eglinton West Station, you must provide proof of payment. Passengers with PRESTO fare cards must tap when entering a subway station and when boarding a vehicle to make sure to verify their proof of payment. Customers paying by cash, tickets or tokens must obtain a paper transfer where they paid their fare.
  • The TTC is placing signs to direct passengers to the correct bus stops. TTC ambassadors will also be on-site to help riders navigate the area during the first weeks of the closure.
  • Passengers travelling to and from Eglinton West Station by bus must walk between the temporary bus bay or the nearest stop and the subway station.
  • Due to upcoming elevator maintenance at Eglinton West Station, the station will not be fully accessible. During the closure, Wheel-Trans vehicles divert to Lawrence West or St Clair West stations.
  • Passengers aboard buses should expect delays along all routes near the future Cedarvale Station.

For pedestrians

  • Expect more pedestrian traffic on Eglinton Avenue West near the temporary bus platforms.
  • You can only access Eglinton West Station along a temporary walkway from the walkway on the west side of the southbound ramp from Allen Road and then across a temporary pedestrian bridge. The bridge leads into the main entrance of Eglinton West Station, allowing excavation work for the future LRT Station to continue below, while you walk safely over top.
  • A temporary crosswalk on Eglinton between Winnett Avenue and Everden is available. During the closure, crossing guards will be stationed at this crosswalk Mondays to Fridays from 6:30 until 9:30 a.m. and 4 until 7 p.m. to help you cross the intersection.
  • Another temporary pedestrian crosswalk is also available on Eglinton between west of Glenarden on the north side and between Flanders and Westover Hill Roads on the south side.
  • The sidewalk on the north side of Eglinton West between the southbound ramp from Allen Road and west of Glenarden Road is closed.
  • The sidewalk on the south side of Eglinton across from Eglinton West Station is closed. You must detour across Ben Nobleman Park and the east side of Everden Road to continue east and west along the south side of Eglinton.
  • The sidewalk on the east side of Everden south of Eglinton is closed.

For cyclists

  • During this phase of construction, the TTC has removed the bicycle parking spots at Eglinton West Station. Space is available at Lawrence West and St Clair West stations.

For motorists

  • The temporary bus platforms restrict traffic on Eglinton between Atlas Avenue and Park Hill Road to just one lane in each direction Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. and all day Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Two lanes are available to all traffic in each direction during rush hours.
  • Two lanes are available for eastbound traffic on Eglinton between Winnett Avenue and Strathearne Road. **Just one lane is available for westbound traffic between the northbound ramp to Allen Road and Park Hill Road.
  • Work zones block traffic lanes on the north side of Eglinton between the northbound ramp from Allen and west of Glenarden Road.
  • Crews have relocated the westbound access to northbound Allen further east.
  • Park Hill, Everden and Strathearn Roads remain closed at Eglinton Avenue.
  • A work zone blocks access to Everden Road south of Eglinton and to 20 parking spaces.
  • You can’t turn left from northbound Winnett onto westbound Eglinton.
