TTC revising routes and services, starting March 29

The TTC is making fairly significant changes to its routes and services, starting Sunday, March 29. Although the TTC had planned many of these changes, some of them are unplanned — resulting from the lower ridership numbers and the need for social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Construction of an elevator at Keele Station means that the TTC is closing the station bus terminal to all buses.

While the terminal is closed, crews are also upgrading the terminal and platforms. Most buses that usually drop off or pick up passengers in the terminal, instead, serve passengers at stops on the street near the station. Some buses also operate to and from High Park Station terminal, instead of Keele.

Closing the terminal affects service along these routes:

  • 41 Keele;
  • 80 Queensway;
  • 89 Weston;
  • 341 Keele overnight;
  • 941 Keele express; and
  • 989 Weston express.

The TTC is also revising service along this route during the closure:

  • 30 High Park.

The TTC is also closing the bus terminal at Eglinton West Station — the future Cedarvale LRT and subway station — to accommodate ongoing Metrolinx construction of the future Cedarvale Station for the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line.

The TTC is significantly revising bus services in the area, while the terminal is closed, affecting buses along these routes:

  • 32A Eglinton West (to / from Renforth Station);
  • 32C Eglinton West (to / from Jane via Trethewey);
  • 32D Eglinton West (to / from Emmett);
  • 63A Ossington (to / from Eglinton West Stn);
  • 63B Ossington (to / from St. Clair);
  • 109B / 109C Ranee; and
  • 332 Eglinton West overnight.

The TTC is also introducing a new temporary route during this phase of the LRT construction project:

It’s also revising service along these routes during the closure:

  • 51 Leslie; and
  • 56 Leaside.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the TTC has cancelled or revised service along many routes, starting Monday, March 16 or Tuesday, March 24, including:

  • 36 Finch West;
  • 40B Junction - Dundas West (Jane);
  • 73D Royal York (Knob Hill / Oak);
  • 134 Progress;
  • 141 Downtown / Mt Pleasant express;
  • 142 Downtown / Avenue Rd express;
  • 143 Downtown / Beach express;
  • 144 Downtown / Don Valley express;
  • 145 Downtown / Humber Bay express;
  • 176 Mimico GO shuttle;
  • 503 Kingston Rd;
  • 508 Lake Shore;
  • 902 Markham Rd express;
  • 905 Eglinton East express;
  • 913 Progress express;
  • 924 Victoria Park express;
  • 925 Don Mills express;
  • 929 Dufferin express;
  • 935 Jane express;
  • 937 Islington express;
  • 939 Finch express;
  • 941 Keele express;

Adjusting the schedules for buses along routes

7 Bathurst

The TTC is adjusting the schedules for buses along the route, it says, “to improve the reliability of the service”. Although it’s adjusting the schedules, buses continue to operate with the same levels of service.

12 Kingston Rd

Starting Monday, March 16 and until after COVID-19 crisis, the TTC is cancelling extra service along the route to and from high schools.

The Toronto District Catholic School Board](https://www.tcdsb.org/) and the administration of Neil McNeil Catholic High School have asked the TTC to adjusts the schedules for buses that usually serve passengers travelling from the school Monday-to-Friday afternoons.

When service resumes, the buses leave the school to head toward Victoria Park Station at 2:41, 2:42, 2:44 and 2:50 p.m. Monday-to-Friday school days.

It ends its trip on Martin Grove Road across from Tollington Road at about 2:05 a.m.

The TTC is also decreasing service along the route.

Making other changes to service along routes

511 Bathurst

After resuming streetcars along the 505 Dundas, the TTC planned to replace streetcars along the 511 Bathurst route with buses, starting Sunday, March 29. However, it has postponed streetcar service along route 505 until “late April”. It simply doesn’t have enough streetcars in its fleet to successfully operate the cars along both routes. Streetcars continue along route 511, for now, but, as the TTC says, “Streetcar operation will continue on 511 Bathurst until late April as streetcar overhead upgrades continue on Dundas Street. Streetcars will operate every 7 to 10 minutes all day.

“Buses will replace streetcars to accommodate various construction projects on Bathurst Street starting in late April.”

The TTC and City of Toronto have planned three projects to upgrade the streetcar tracks on Bathurst Street in 2020, which is why the TTC has decided to operate buses along the route… eventually:

  • between Dundas Street West and Wolseley Loop (just north of Queen Street West);
  • on the bridge over the Metrolinx tracks south of Front Street West; and
  • at Bathurst Station terminal.

506 Carlton

Starting Sunday, March 29, some streetcars that currently operate to and from Leslie Barns, operate, instead, to and from Russell Carhouse.

505 Dundas

The TTC intended to resume streetcar service along Dundas Streets East and West starting Sunday, March 29. However, according to the TTC, “Bus operation will continue on 505 Dundas until late April, due to unforeseen delays in upgrading streetcar overhead [wiring] infrastructure between Spadina Avenue and Parliament Street. Buses will operate every 7 to 9 minutes at all times.”

Transit advocate Steve Munro reports in his latest post, “The overhead conversion on this route is in a half-completed state from trolley pole to pan-friendly wiring.

  • Curves on Broadview from Gerrard north to Danforth have never been upgraded for pantograph operation even though the tangent wire was converted some time ago.
  • The section of the route between Parliament and McCaul has been converted completely for pans, and is not compatible with trolley pole operation.

“The TTC has not announced what service level will be provided by the continued bus operation on 505 Dundas.”

(Pantographs are the Z-shaped devices you can see on the top of some of the TTC’s new, low-floor Toronto Flexity streetcars. They conduct power from the overhead wiring to the streetcar motors. They generally operate more efficiently than trolley poles and seldom “de-wire”. However, the TTC has to upgrade the overhead wiring to operate with pantographs along certain routes.)

The TTC explains, “Low-floor streetcars will operate between Dundas West Station and Broadview Station once overhead upgrades are complete. We thank our customers for their patience and understanding during this time.”

Continuing bus operation along the 505 Dundas route also affects service along the 511 Bathurst route.

509 Harbourfront

Starting Sunday, March 29, streetcars entering or leaving service operate along Spadina and Lower Spadina Avenues, instead of Bathurst Street, due to upcoming construction on Bathurst.

508 Lake Shore

When streetcars have resumed service along the route after the COVID-19 crisis, tow of the five streetcars serving the route operate to and from Russell Carhouse, instead of Roncesvalles Carhouse](/streetcar/4301.shtml). Construction at the north gate at Roncesvalles blocks streetcar access to and from route 508.

501 Queen

Starting Sunday, March 30, all streetcars serving the Neville Park Loop to Humber Loop branch of the route operate to and from Russell Carhouse, instead of Roncesvalles Carhouse](/streetcar/4301.shtml). Construction at the north gate at Roncesvalles blocks streetcar access to and from route 501.

The TTC is also increasing service along the route.

Transit agencies often interline buses along two or more routes sharing a common terminal to save resources — human resources, meaning drivers and physical resources, meaning vehicles. For example, after an eastbound bus along the 80 Queensway route arrives in High Park Station terminal, it then completes a round trip along the 30 High Park route. After returning to the High Park Station area, the bus then proceeds westbound along the 80 Queensway route.
