Gerrard East track repairs:
TTC detours, March 30 to April 4

Starting 5 a.m. Monday, March 30, TTC track crews repairing the streetcar tracks

  • on Gerrard Street East between Blackburn and River Streets.

Crews work only in the track area to:

  • break and remove concrete to expose the rail;
  • replace the “old” rail with new rail; and
  • place new concrete.

The TTC is detouring streetcars along these routes, while crews repair the tracks:

  • 306 Carlton overnight; and
  • 506 Carlton.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Broadview Avenue and Parliament Street.

Note that the map reverses the labels identifying St. Matthews Road and Jack Layton Way. St. Matthews extends north and south; Jack Layton east and west.

Track repairs on Gerrard Street East and the resulting TTC detours continue until 5 a.m. April 4.

The TTC says, “Rail work of this nature is required around-the-clock to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete.”

The track crew will cut and chip the concrete from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. for about three days to expose the individual rail sections they intend to replace.

As they replace old rail with new rail, they cut, weld and grind the new rail.

They’ll place new concrete in the track area and set it to cure. The new concrete requires curing time before the crews can remove the work zone so that traffic can again flow over the track area by 5 a.m. Saturday, April 4.

Welding machines and trailers will be on site.

The work zone restricts traffic to just one lane in each direction.

The City of Toronto is prohibiting parking and left turns near the work zone.
