Update — Wednesday, September 2, 10:46 p.m.: The TTC opened the elevators at Chester Station to passengers today.

The TTC is continuing its “Easier Access” program to install elevators in its subway stations, making the subway system accessible for everyone. The program supports the Government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The provincial legislation commits the TTC to achieving a barrier-free transit system by 2025.

It’s also building second exits from stations with just one exit to increase passenger safety during emergencies.

At Chester Station, TTC contractors are building the elevators and a second exit at the same time. Crews are progressing well on installing the elevator installation as part of the “Easier Access” project. The next phase of activities involves restoring the Easier Access work zone around the station building.

“As early as” Monday, May 25, the crews are grading and repaving the walkway and parking lot and the enclosed portion in front of the main doors. The walkway north of the station will not be accessible during this phase of the project.

When the crews have finished this phase, the Toronto Parking Authority can restore the parking lot behind the station building and 11 parking spaces will again be available.

Restoration work at Chester Station continues “for approximately 5 weeks” or until June 28.

The walkway remains closed “until the end of the year” or until December 31.
