Metrolinx continues a project to upgrade GO Transit’s Stouffville line tracks to prepare for future two-way, all-day service along the rail corridor. As part of the project, it’s also building new station features at Milliken GO Station. After construction, the station will accommodate as many as 1,000 new daily passengers over the next 10 years.

Metrolinx is also working with the City of Toronto and Region of York to build an underpass on Steeles Avenue East to separate the train tracks from traffic, so that trains and vehicles can move through the area more easily.

According to Metrolinx, starting 8 p.m. Friday, May 29, the City is closing

  • Steeles Avenue East between Old Kennedy Road / Silver Star Boulevard and Redlea Avenue,

as contractors finish building a diversion roadway on the north side of Steeles East and reconfigure traffic lanes so that traffic flows on the new road. The diversion will carry traffic along Steeles around the work zone, as construction of the underpass proceeds.

Since Friday, May 8, the TTC has detoured buses along these routes to avoid delays during the construction:

  • 43 Kennedy;
  • 53 Steeles East;
  • 343 Kennedy overnight; and
  • 353 Steeles overnight.

Note that the TTC has temporarily suspended service along the 953 Steeles East express route during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Construction on Steeles Avenue East and the resulting TTC detours continue until 6 a.m. June 1.

During the weekend closure, motorists must watch for traffic-control personnel, obey speed limits at all times and look out for signs directing you along the detour route. The street is also closed to pedestrians this weekend. GO Transit is operating shuttle buses so that pedestrians can get around the closed section of the street.

From Monday, June 1 until “late 2021” (or until about December 31, 2021), motorists can drive along the new diversion road on the north side of Steeles Avenue East. The diversion road maintains the same number of traffic lanes as the current Steeles East roadway — two lanes of traffic in each direction. During the construction period, access to and from Turf Avenue is no longer available.

Residents will notice more heavy equipment and cranes in the construction area.

Access to businesses is available from Silver Star Boulevard and Redlea Avenue.

Starting June 1, pedestrians can only walk along the north side of the diversion road between Old Kennedy and Redlea. Pedestrian access is not available on the south side due to space restrictions, except to and from Splendid China Mall.

By the end of 2021, Milliken GO station will also include:

  • a renovated platform beside the current track;
  • a new second track and platform;
  • two new pedestrian tunnels with elevators;
  • canopies and shelters on the platforms to protect you from the elements;
  • a canopy-covered walkway to Steeles Avenue East; and
  • a pedestrian bridge across Steeles Ave that connects to both platforms.
