Update — Friday, July 24, 7:15 a.m.: TTC crews finish replacing the tracks in Bathurst Station Monday, July 27. TTC buses end their detour and resume regular service to and from the terminal.
Update — Monday, July 13, 10:32 p.m.: TTC crews finished replacing the tracks on Bathurst Street today. The City has reopened Bathurst Street to traffic. Buses continue to detour, as the crews have started working in Bathurst Station terminal.
Sunday, June 21, the TTC starts a project to renew the streetcar track infrastructure at Bathurst Station and on Bathurst Street near the station. According to the TTC, “This infrastructure was last replaced in 2005 and is at the end of its lifecycle.”
Starting 8 a.m. Sunday, June 21, the City of Toronto is closing
- Bathurst Street between Follis Street and Bloor Street West
to accommodate TTC crews while they deliver rail for the project.
Starting Monday, June 22, the City reopens the section between Follis and Barton Avenue, but closes
- Bathurst Street between Barton Avenue and Bloor Street West
to all traffic, as the crews start working to replace the track.
The TTC is detouring buses along these routes, while the street is closed:
It has replaced streetcars with buses along the 511 Bathurst route with since Monday, April 20 to accommodate this and several other construction projects on Bathurst in 2020.
Track construction near Bathurst Station and the resulting TTC detours continue until September 5.
Crews generally work in two phases:
- Phase 1: Track work on the Bathurst Street roadway; and
- Phase 2: Track work in Bathurst Station terminal.
Crews generally break concrete between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. Excavation continues at various times of the day. The TTC says, “Breaking work is the most disruptive and will typically last the first week of each construction phase.” Expect periods of 24-hours “around-the-clock” work, while crews install the rail.
According to the TTC, “Around-the-clock work during periods of rail installation by TTC track crews is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete and support daytime construction.” Overnight, crews may:
- move new rail into position; install the rail; and
- weld and grind the rail.
Crews upgrade the overhead wiring work before and after periods of removing and installing tracks.
Starting Sunday, June 21 at 8 a.m., TTC crews will be active in the area delivering equipment, rail and materials to site. They’ll temporarily park as many as eight flat-bed trailers containing pre-assembled rail panels on the tracks from north of the work zone to Follis Avenue. By pre-assembling the rail panels, the TTC can speed up the process of installing new rail and decrease the time line for disrupting the nearby community.
As crews proceed with installing the tracks, the number of trailers on Bathurst will decrease. Toronto Police Service officers will escotrt the trailers to the site for safety.
The crews will park the trailers with enough space between to allow motorists to U-turn or access side streets and driveways. The City of Toronto is restricting parking on both sides of Bathurst between Follis Avenue and Bathurst Station, while the crews store the rail on the tracks. As crews move the rails southward to the work zone, the City may restore parking in this area. However, the City is prohibiting parking on Bathurst between Barton Avenue and Bloor Street West throughout the project.
Crews maintain access to the east-west laneway between the station and Bloor Street will be maintained. The City is converting London Street west of Bathurst Street to two-way traffic during construction.
The work zone blocks the sidewalk on the east side of Bathurst throughout the project. Walk on the west side of the street.
The Bike Share Station on the east side of Bathurst Street will not be available during construction.
