HSR revising services, starting June 28



Starting Monday, June 28, the Hamilton Street Railway further decreases service along several routes, due to declining ridership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The HSR also resumes seasonal service along three routes.

The Hamilton transit agency continues to operate with reduced schedules until further notice. Buses along most routes are following Saturday schedules Mondays to Fridays and regular weekend schedules Saturdays, Sunday and holidays.

Buses along these routes which do not have Saturday service operate with regular schedules Mondays to Fridays:

  • 12 Wentworth;
  • 52A Dundas local.

Buses along this route operate with regular schedules throughout the week:

  • 18 Waterdown.

Buses along this route operate every 30 minutes Mondays to Fridays only during rush hours:

  • 20 A-Line express.

The HSR is revising service along these routes: 2 Barton; 3 Cannon; 4 Bayfront; 5 Delaware; 6 Aberdeen; 7 Locke; 8 York; 9 Rock Gardens; 16 Ancaster; 18 Waterdown; 22 Upper Ottawa; 56 Centennial; 99 Waterfront shuttle.

Decreasing service along routes


6 Aberdeen

Starting Sunday, June 28, the HSR cancels all service along the route after 10 p.m. Sundays and holidays for the summer.

Summer service ends and regular service resumes Tuesday, September 8.

16 Ancaster

Starting Saturday, July 4, the HSR cancels all service along the route after 6 p.m. Saturdays for the summer.

2 Barton

The HSR is cancelling trips along the route in both directions early Monday-to-Friday mornings for the summer. Friday, June 26 is the last day until September that it operates the outbound buses that usually leave the Hamilton GO Centre at 4:30 and 4:45 a.m. (The buses usually end their trips in Bell Manor Loop at 5:07 and 5:22 a.m.) It’s also the last day that it operates the inbound buses that usually leave Bell Manor at 5:20 and 5:35 a.m. (The buses usually end their trips in the GO Centre at 6:02 and 6:12 a.m.)

Summer service ends and regular service resumes Tuesday, September 8.

4 Bayfront

Starting Sunday, June 28, the HSR cancels all service along the route after 10 p.m. every day for the summer.

The HSR is also cancelling an outbound trip along the route early Sunday-and-holiday mornings for the summer. Sunday, June 21 was the last day until September that the HSR operated the outbound bus that usually leaves James Street South north of Main Street West at 5:20 a.m. (The bus usually ends its trip in Mount Albion Loop at 6:02 a.m.)

Summer service ends and regular service resumes Tuesday, September 8.

3 Cannon

Starting Sunday, June 28, the HSR cancels all service along the route after 10 p.m. every day for the summer.

Friday, June 26 is the last day until September that the HSR operates the outbound bus that usually leaves Hamilton GO Centre at 5:30 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The bus usually ended its trip on Reid Avenue North north of Dunsmure Road at 5:56 a.m.)

The HSR is also decreasing the frequency of service along the route.

Summer service ends and regular service resumes Tuesday, September 8.

56 Centennial

The City of Hamilton recently endorsed the joint Hamilton Conservation Authority and city staff recommendation not to operate the wave-action pool in Confederation Park for the 2020 season.

Accordingly, the HSR will not operate buses into the park when it resumes service along the route Sunday, June 28.

The HSR is also making another change to service along the route.

7 Locke

42 Mohawk East

Sunday, June 21 is the last day that the HSR operates buses along the route Sundays and holidays. Friday, June 26 is the last day that the HSR operates buses along the route Mondays to Fridays.

Starting Saturday, July 4 buses operate along the route Saturdays only.

9 Rock Gardens

The HSR will resume seasonal service along the route when the Hamilton’s Public Health and Emergency Operations Centre ends non-essential travel restrictions.

This year, it’s ending service two hours earlier than during previous years.

Inbound buses leave Holy Sepulchre Cemetery at 10:40 a.m. and every hour until 4:40 p.m. Sundays and holidays. They end their trips on James Street South north of Main Street West at 10:55 a.m. and every hour until 4:55 p.m.

Outbound buses leave James South north of Main West at 10:05 a.m. Sundays and holidays and every hour until 4:05 p.m. They end their trips in the cemetery at 10:35 a.m. and every hour until 4:35 p.m.

The HSR is also making another change to service along the route.

22 Upper Ottawa

The HSR is cancelling an early-morning outbound trip along the route early Monday-to-Friday mornings for the summer. Friday, **June 26 is the last day that it operates the bus that usually leaves MacNab Terminal at 5:20 a.m. (The bus usually ends its trip on Upper Ottawa Street south of Rymal Road East at 5:49 a.m.

Summer service ends and regular service resumes Tuesday, September 8.

Decreasing the frequency of service along routes

3 Cannon

The HSR is decreasing the frequency of service along the route for the summer.

Starting Monday, June 29, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 30 minutes, instead of every 20 minutes, Mondays to Fridays from about 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Starting Saturday, July 4, the buses serve passengers at the stops:

  • every 30 minutes, instead of every 20 minutes, Saturdays from about 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

With these changes, buses operate along the route every 30 minutes Mondays to Fridays and Saturdays before about 9 p.m.

Summer service ends and regular Monday-to-Friday service resumes Tuesday, September 8. Regular Saturday service resumes Saturday, September 12.

The HSR is also decreasing the hours of service along the route.

5 Delaware

The HSR is decreasing the frequency of service along the route for the summer.

Starting Sunday, June 28, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route Sundays and holidays from about 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.:

  • every 12 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes, along the main part of the route; and
  • every 36 minutes, instead of every 30 minutes, along the east- and west-end branches.

Starting Saturday, July 8, buses serve passenger at stops Saturdays from about 6 a.m. until 9 p.m.:

  • every 12 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes, along the main part of the route; and
  • every 36 minutes, instead of every 30 minutes, along the east- and west-end branches.

Summer service ends and regular Sunday-and-holiday service resumes Sunday, September 6. Regular Saturday service resumes Saturday, September 12.

11 Parkdale

Resuming seasonal services along routes


56 Centennial

Starting Sunday, June 28, the HSR resumes service along the route every day until Saturday, September 5.

Southbound buses start their trips in Lakeland Loop on Van Wagners Beach Road, just east of Beach Boulevard, then proceed:

eastward along Van Wagners Beach;
southward along Centennial Parkway North;
eastward along the access road into SmartCentres Stoney Creek, looping through the property, then returning westward along the access road;
southward along Centennial North;
westward along Queenston Road; and then
northward into Eastgate Terminal,
ending their trips.

Southbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • in Lakeland Loop,
  • on Van Wagners Beach Road across from Lakeland Pool, Hutch’s and Baranga’s, Adventure Village and the main entrance to Confederation Park,
  • at SmartCentres Stoney Creek,
  • on Centennial Parkway North at Bancroft Street, Barton Street East, Eastgate Court, Delawana Drive and across from Vineyard Road and
  • in Eastgate Terminal.

Southbound buses leave Lakeland at 10:22 a.m. every day and about every 45 minutes until 5:52 p.m. They end their trips in Eastgate Terminal at 10:38 a.m. and about every 45 minutes until 6:08 p.m.

Northbound buses reverse the southbound routing.

Northbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • in Eastgate Terminal,
  • on Centennial Parkway North north of Queenston Road, at Vineyard Road and Delawana Drive, north of Violet Drive, at Barton Street East, across from Bancroft Street and Goderich Road,
  • at SmartCentres Stoney Creek,
  • on Van Wagners Beach Road at the main entrance to Confederation Park and beside Adventure Village, Baranga’s, Hutch’s and Lakeland Pool and
  • in Lakeland Loop.

Northbound buses leave Eastgate at 10 a.m. and every 45 minutes until 5:30 p.m. They end their trips in Lakeland Loop at 10:18 a.m. and every 45 minutes until 5:48 a.m.

Buses don’t operate into Confederation Park this year.

The HSR is also making another change to service along the route.

9 Rock Gardens

The HSR will resume seasonal service along the route when Hamilton’s Public Health and Emergency Operations Centre no longer restricts non-essential travel.

Inbound buses start their trips in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, then proceed:

westward along Plains Road West and Spring Garden Road;
counterclockwise through Woodland Cemetery;
eastward along Spring Garden;
northward along Botanical Drive;
westward along Plains West;
south- and eastward along York Boulevard; and then
southward along James Streets North and South,
ending their trips.

Passengers may “flag” the buses inside Holy Sepulchre and Woodland cemeteries by waving at the drivers to request them to stop. Otherwise, inbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on Plains Road West beside #549 Plains West,
  • on Spring Garden Road at Botanical Drive,
  • on Botanical Drive at Plains Road West,
  • on Plains West across from Botanical Drive and Spring Garden Road and at York Boulevard,
  • on York Boulevard at the Rock Gardens and Old Guelph Road, beside Hamilton Cemetery (3 stops) and at Woodbine Crescent, Locke, Pearl, Queen, Hess and Bay Streets North, across from Park Street North and at James Street North,
  • on James Street North across from Rebecca Street and

  • on James Street South at Main Street West.

Outbound buses start their trips on James Street South at Main Street West, then proceed:

southward along James South;
westward along Hunter Street West;
northward along Bay Streets South and North;
westward along Cannon Street West;
west- and northward along York Boulevard;
eastward along Plains Road West;
southward along Botanical Drive;
westward along Spring Garden Road;
counterclockwise through Woodland Cemetery;
eastward along Spring Garden and Plains West; and then
counterclockwise through Holy Sepulchre Cemetery,
ending their trips.

Passengers may “flag” the buses inside Woodland and Holy Sepulchre cemeteries by waving at the drivers to request them to stop. Otherwise, outbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on James Street South at Main and Hunter Streets West,
  • on Hunter Street West at MacNab Street South, across from Park Street South and at Bay Street South,
  • on Bay Street South across from George Street,
  • on Bay Street North north of King Street West and at Vine Street,
  • on Cannon Street West at Hess Street North,
  • on York Boulevard west of Queen Street North, at Ray and Locke Streets North and Inchbury Street, beside Dundurn Castle, across from Hamilton Cemetery [3 stops], across from Old Guelph Road, at the Rock Garden and Plains Road,
  • on Plains Road West at Spring Garden Road and Botanical Drive,
  • on Botanical Drive at Spring Garden Road,
  • on Spring Garden Road [westbound] across from Woodland Cemetery,
  • on Spring Garden Road [eastbound] beside Woodland Cemetery and
  • on Plains Road beside Holy Sepulchre Cemetery [2 stops].

Buses will operate Sundays and holidays until Sunday, November 8.

The HSR is also decreasing the hours of service and making another change to service along the route.

99 Waterfront shuttle

Starting Sunday, June 28, the HSR resumes service along the route every day until Labour Day, Monday, September 7.

Due to ongoing construction on Discovery Drive, buses may have to detour.

Due to the detour, inbound buses likely start their trips on James Street North south of Guise Street West, then proceed:

southward along James North; and then
westward along King Street West to across from Summers Lane,
ending their trips.

Inbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on James Street North south of Guise and Strachan Streets West, at Colbourne Street, south of Cannon Street West and across from King William Street and
  • on King Street West across from Summers Lane.

Inbound buses leave James North / Guise West at 10:22 a.m. every day and every 30 minutes until 8:22 p.m., then one last trip at 9 p.m. They end their trips on King West across from Summers at 10:34 a.m. and every 30 minutes until 8:34 p.m., then one last trip at 9:12 p.m.

Outbound buses leave King West across from Summers, then proceed:

westward along King;
northward along Bay Street North;
eastward along York Boulevard;
northward along James Street North;
eastward along Burlington Street East;
northward along John Street North;
westward along Guise Street East; and then
southward along James North to beyond Guise West,
ending their trips.

Outbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on King Street West across from Summers Lane,
  • on York Boulevard across from MacNab Street North,
  • on James Street North at Cannon Street East, north of Barton Street East and at Strachan and Burlington Streets East,
  • on Guise Street East at Discovery Drive and
  • on James Street North south of Guise West.

Outbound buses leave King West across from Summers at 10:05 a.m. every day and every 30 minutes until 8:35 p.m. They end their trips at James North / Guise West at 10:18 a.m. and every 30 minutes until 8:38 p.m.

The HSR is making another change to service along the route.

According to the HSR, the service “may be cancelled due to seasonal tourist attractions remaining closed, and / or low ridership and the resource will be re-allocated to higher-demand routes on an “as-needed” basis.”

99 Waterfront shuttle

The HSR will resume seasonal service along the route when Hamilton’s Public Health and Emergency Operations Centre no longer restricts non-essential travel.

Again this year, it operates replica trolley buses along the route. The replica buses bear the livery of Hamilton’s last streetcars, which operated until April 6, 1951.

According to the HSR, the service “may be cancelled due to seasonal tourist attractions remaining closed, and/or low ridership and the resource will be re-allocated to higher demand routes on an as needed basis.”
