DRT raising fares, July 2

Last February, Durham Region Council approved its budget, including a proposal for Durham Region Transit to increase fares, starting Friday, May 1. However, since DRT stopped collecting fares due to the social-distancing measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, starting Thursday, March 19, it postponed the increase.

Since DRT is again collecting fares, starting Thursday, July 2 and requiring passengers to board through the front door on buses, it’s also imposing the new fare rates. That day, a single tap with a PRESTO fare-card increases by five cents. If you pay by cash, you’ll need to drop an extra quarter into the farebox.

The 2020 budget resulted in the price of monthly passes in all fare categories remaining the same as in 2019. This includes the co-fare program with Metrolinx that enables passengers to travel with DRT for only 80 cents when connecting to and from GO Transit.

According to a DRT news release, “To ensure the safety of operators and [passengers], and encourage “contact-less” fare payment wherever possible,” DRT is no longer issuing paper transfers, eliminating all paper passes except for the Access Pass, and limiting paper ticket sales to social and community agencies only. Passengers paying with cash or tickets must pay each time they board a bus. Transfers are only available if you pay with PRESTO.

If you still use tickets, you can “top-up” your fare to the new rate with five cents when you board the bus until July 31. From Saturday, August 1 until Wednesday, September 30, you can exchange any valid tickets for equal value onto a PRESTO card at DRT’s Customer Service Centre. The card costs $6.

To prepare passengers for “contact-less” payment, DRT distibuted free PRESTO cards, starting Wednesday, June 24.
