Queen East / Parliament overhead wiring upgrades: TTC detouring cars, July 18 to 20

Updated — Saturday, July 18, 3:34 p.m.

Starting 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July 18, TTC crews are replacing the overhead streetcar contact wire

  • at the intersection of Queen Street East with Parliament Street.

The TTC is detouring cars along these routes, while the work zone blocks the tracks:

  • 301 Queen overnight; and
  • 501 Queen.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Broadview Avenue and Church Street.

Overhead wiring upgrades at Queen East / Parliament and the resulting TTC detours continue until 5 a.m. July 20.

Saturday at 12:01 a.m., the overhead crew starts setting up the work zone at the intersection, separating it from active traffic lanes with reflective orange traffic cones. After they’ve isolated the power, they start removing the wire, working in two shifts. They work only in the track area in a movable work zone to:

  • isolate the overhead power;
  • remove the old wire;
  • replace the old wire with the new wire;
  • correcting the wire tension and alignment; and
  • completing all supporting connections of the new wire.

The TTC says, “Overhead wire installation work of this nature is generally not very noisy, but some noise will be unavoidable. Nearby residents may hear the back-up beeping noise from the trucks.” Crews use three work trucks and a wire wagon during this project.

“Paid-duty” Toronto Police Service officers manage traffic through the intersection/work zone. Since the work zone is in the intersection, regular on-street parking remains available on Queen East and Parliament Street. The location of the work zone may restrict left turns through the intersection.
