Lake Shore West / Kipling track repairs: TTC detours, September 12, 13, 14

Starting 5 a.m. Saturday, September 12, TTC track crews are “conducting essential rail maintenance”

  • on Lake Shore Boulevard West at Kipling Avenue.

The crews are repairing or replacing small sections of rail at the intersection.

The TTC is detouring streetcars along these routes, while the work zone blocks the tracks:

  • 301 Queen overnight; and
  • 501 Queen.

Shuttle buses replace the cars. Buses operate along two routes:

  • 301L / 501L Queen / Long Branch shuttle-bus route; and
  • 501M Marine Parade shuttle-bus route.

Track repairs at Lake Shore West / Kipling and the resulting TTC detours continue until September 14.

Crews start setting up the work zone on Lake Shore West at Kipling around 5 a.m. Saturday, September 12. Afterwards, they

  • start cutting the old rails and concrete by 7 a.m.;
  • chip the concrete and excavate to expose the old rails;
  • remove the old rail;
  • install the new rail;
  • cut, weld and grind the new rail;
  • place new concrete by about 8 p.m. Saturday.
  • clean up the work site Sunday, September 13.

Crews must leave the concrete in place for 24 hours to let it set. They remove the work zone by 5 a.m. Monday, September 14 and traffic can again flow over the track area.

The work zone restricts traffic on Lake Shore to just one lane in each direction. It also blocks the north-south crosswalk on the east side of the intersection and prevents motorists from turning left. “Paid-duty” Toronto Police Service officers and traffic-control personnel will be on site to help guide motorists, cyclists and pedestrians around the work zone.

The City of Toronto may temporarily prohibit on-street parking near the intersection.

Crews mostly work from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. They may also work overnight to weld and grind the rails.
