Update — Sunday, October 18, 1:58 p.m.: Starting tonight, crews are relocating rail strings and other construction materials closer to the site of the track-replacement project on Bathurst between Front West and Fort York.
Starting Monday, September 21, the City of Toronto is closing
- Bathurst Street, southbound lanes, between Dundas Street West and Wolselsy Loop (north of Queen Street West)
to accommodate a City / TTC project to renew the streetcar tracks.
The work zone restricts northbound traffic to just one lane.
The TTC is detouring buses along these routes, while the traffic lanes are closed:
Construction on this phase of the project and the resulting TTC detour continues until October 12. Construction on the entire project to replace the tracks on Bathurst between Dundas West and Wolseley continues “until late October” or until October 31.
The TTC also continues to detour the buses to accommodate another project on Bathurst Street south of Front Street West.
The TTC has replaced streetcars with buses along route 511 since Monday, April 20 to maintain service during this and several other construction projects on Bathurst Street this year.
During the rail-replacement project between Dundas and Wolsely, TTC crews are storing a trailer and other materials in Wolseley Loop.
The TTC says, “Around-the-clock work by TTC is required during periods of new rail installation to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete, and support the daytime construction.” When working overnight to install tracks, the crews may:
- move rail into position;
- assemble rail strings;
- install rail; and
- weld and grind the rail.
Over the course of a few nights near the end of the track-replacement project between Dundas West and Wolseley, TTC night crews will relocate some rail strings that they currently store on Bathurst north of Queen Street West to an area closer to the work zone south of Front Street West. To move the rail strings safely and efficiently, the TTC will complete this activity overnight with a Toronto Police Service escort. Expect noise during this night activity.
