DRT revises routes and services, September 28

As part of Durham Region Transit’s Ridership Recovery Framework to encourage and increase transit ridership, DRT is introducing a new transit network to meet current and projected passenger demand, from early morning to late night, starting Monday, September 28. Residents will have access to public transit no matter where they live, work or are travelling to within the region.

DRT says, “An innovative approach to transit service, the September 28 service plan delivers increased frequency and availability of service with a three-pronged approach. This will ensure maximum flexibility for customers and alignment with current and projected ridership trends and patterns.”

  1. Frequent network providing 15 minutes or less wait times Mondays to Fridays, from about 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on high-volume corridors:
  • Highway 2 West;
  • Simcoe Street;
  • King and Bond Streets;
  • Taunton Road; and
  • Rossland Road.
  1. Grid network with 30-minute-or-less wait times, seven days a week along north-south and west-east cross-roads:
  • Whites Road;
  • Bayly / Victoria / Consumers;
  • Olive / Harmony;
  • Harwood Avenue;
  • Salem Road;
  • Brock Street / Baldwin Street;
  • Park Road;
  • Wilson Road;
  • Ritson Road; and
  • Highway 2 East (Bowmanville).
  1. New On-Demand service replacing local routes that continue to experience low ridership, offering service to passengers in these areas when and how they need it: stop-to-stop within a zone; facilitating connections to frequent and grid routes; or to the local GO station or bus terminal. On-Demand service is also extending throughout Clarington, delivering safe and reliable transit access across the region, with access to new DRT scheduled service connecting Bowmanville to Oshawa.

To support these service enhancements, DRT is launching a new, interactive, mobile applcation that will allow you to plan and book your trips in real-time right from your mobile device at your convenience. Two apps are required to use On Demand: Transit app (called “Transit” in the App Store and Google Play) and DRT On-Demand. Alternatively, you can still call in to speak with a booking agent to book their trip.

DRT says, “This new approach to On-Demand provides [passengers] with a modern and seamless travel experience. The Transit app is where [passengers] will plan their trip, access real-time bus status updates, and receive notifications (think of this as your travel dashboard), and will connect directly to the DRT On Demand app; customers will be prompted to download DRT On Demand within the Transit app. The DRT On Demand app provides the information about rides available in the customer’s area (think of it as your booking agent). [Passengers] can download both the Transit and DRT On Demand apps from either the App Store or Google Play Store.”

This service change also introduces several new routes, some of which Durham Region previously approved in the 2020 service plan. DRT planners based the new routes on ridership trends and passenger feedback:

  • 901 PULSE Simcoe bus rapid transit now serves Simcoe Street with more frequent service.
  • 902 King connects Clarington to Oshawa providing seamless service for residents of, and visitors to, Courtice and Bowmanville.
  • 905 Thickson - Reach connects Uxbridge and Port Perry to North Oshawa and Whitby.
  • 917 Bayly / Consumers connects Pickering to Oshawa ensuring continuous west to east service south of the 401.

DRT is revising the paths for buses along these routes:

Sunday, September 27 is the last day that DRT operates buses along these routes (for now (?)):

  • 110 Finch West;
  • 112 Brock;
  • 217 Monarch;
  • 223 Bayly;
  • 304 Anderson;
  • 305 Thickson;
  • 308 Whitby Shores;
  • 401 Simcoe;
  • 402 King;
  • 409 Garrard;
  • 411 South Courtice;
  • 412 Adelaide;
  • 417 Conlin;
  • 501 South Bowmanville;
  • 502 North Bowmanville;
  • 910 Campus Connect;
  • 922 Bloor - Townline;
  • 950 Reach - Simcoe North.

Buses along new or revised routes continue to provide service along all or part of these routes that DRT is cancelling:

  • 223 Bayly;
  • 305 Thickson;
  • 401 Simcoe;
  • 402 King;
  • 501 South Bowmanville;
  • 502 North Bowmanville;
  • 910 Campus Connect;
  • 922 Bloor - Townline;
  • 950 Reach - Simcoe North.

DRT has not operated buses along several routes since March 23 or June 8. With this service change, it’s “permanently” cancelling service along these routes (for now (?)):

  • 107 Rosebank;

  • 193 Pickering community bus;
  • 215 Salem North;

DRT On-Demand

DRT On-Demand is a personal, flexible service that provides you public transit options based on your trip needs: whether it’s travelling stop-to-stop within a zone, facilitating connections to frequent and grid routes or to the local GO Transit station or bus terminal.

DRT says the On-Demand service is replacing local routes that continue to experience low ridership, offering service to passengers in these areas when they need it; service is also extending throughout Clarington, delivering safe and reliable transit access across the region.

DRT On-Demand is a shared-ride service. You may share the vehicle with others travelling in a similar direction, stopping along the way. DRT won’t guarantee that trips will be a direct ride.

Both DRT vehicles and contracted taxis with DRT signage on the exterior of the vehicle provide On-Demand service.

To support the On-Demand service enhancements, DRT is also launching a new, interactive, mobile application that will allow you plan and book your trips right from your mobile device.

Two apps are required to use On-Demand: Transit app (called “Transit” in The App Store and GooglePlay) and DRT On-Demand. Alternatively, you can call in to speak with a booking agent to book your trip.

According to DRT, this new approach to On-Demand provides you with a modern and seamless travel experience. The Transit app is where you will plan your trip, access real-time bus status updates, and receive notifications (think of this as your travel dashboard), and will connect directly to the DRT On-Demand app; you will be prompted to download DRT On-Demand within the Transit app. The DRT On-Demand app provides the information about on-demand rides available in the your area (think of it as your booking agent).

Beginning on September 28, you can:

  • Use the Transit app to enter your trip start and end locations and the time you want to travel;
  • Transit app will provide several options for you to complete your transit trip. If the option you choose includes On-Demand service, you’ll be prompted to download and taken to the DRT On-Demand app to book your trip.
  • You also have the option to telephone an On-Demand booking agent instead of using the app at 1-866-247-0055.

Back to top

Booking your trip
  1. Download the Transit and DRT On-Demand apps.
  2. Using Transit, view your trip options on the day you want to travel by typing in where you want to go and when. You will be presented with several options to complete your trip. Select the trip option that works best for you. Trips with On-Demand will appear at the bottom of your screen and link directly with Transit.
  3. If your trip includes On-Demand service, you will be directed to the DRT On-Demand App to finish booking your trip. You can then indicate:
  • The number of riders
  • Any accessibility requirements
  • Your desired departure or arrival time before booking your trip.

Expect a trip confirmation via DRT On-Demand app 15 minutes before your pick-up time.

You also have the option to call an On-Demand booking agent at 1-866-247-0055. Provide the agent with your basic information, location, intended destination and preferred departure or arrival time. The agent will confirm and provide trip details verbally.
