King West / Dowling track repairs: TTC detour, October 17 to 19

Starting 5 a.m. Saturday, October 17, TTC track crews are replacing a short section of the rail

  • on King Street West at Dowling Avenue.

Crews work only in the track area to:

  • break the concrete to expose the old rail;
  • replace the old rail with new rail; and
  • place new concrete.

The transit agency is detouring streetcars along these routes while the work zone blocks the tracks:

  • 304 King overnight; and
  • 504A King.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Queen Street West / The Queensway and Shaw Street.

Track repairs at King West / Dowling and the resulting TTC detour continue until October 19.

Starting 5 a.m. Saturday, the crew sets up a work zone in the intersection.

During this project, crews mostly work from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. However they may also need to work overnight to grind and weld rail. They’re:

  • cutting rail and concrete, starting 7 a.m.;
  • chipping and removing the concrete to expose the old rail;
  • removing the old rail, including grinding and welding the rail;
  • installing the new rail;
  • placing new concrete around 8 p.m. Saturday;
  • setting the concrete to “cure” for 24 hours;
  • cleaning up the site Sunday; and
  • removing the work zone so that traffic can flow over all lanes of the roadway by 5 a.m. Monday.

The work zone restricts traffic lanes on King Street West to just one lane in each direction. It also prevents motorists from turning left at the intersection. The City of Toronto is temporarily prohibiting on-street traffic near the work zone.
