Starting 5 a.m. Monday, March 1, TTC crews are replacing two rail-expansion joints in the centre of the bridge carrying
- Dundas Street East over the Don River and the Don Valley Parkway.
Crews work only in the track area to
- saw-cut;
- break concrete to expose the old rail;
- replace the expansion joints; and
- place new concrete.
The TTC is also detouring streetcars along these routes to accommodate the work zone:
Shuttle buses replace streetcars along route 505 between Gerrard Street East / Broadview Avenue and Dundas Street East / Parliament Street.
(Note that the TTC is already detouring streetcars along the 306 / 506 Carlton routes due to long-term construction east of Broadview Avenue. Shuttle buses replace route 306 / 506 streetcars east of Broadview.)
Track maintenance on Dundas Street East and the resulting TTC detours continue until March 6.
By 5 a.m. Monday, March 1, crews start setting up the work zone. By 7 a.m. they start cutting into the concrete and by 8 a.m. excavate to expose the old rail. They stop excavating nightly by about 10 p.m.
The TTC says, “While most work typically ends at 11 p.m., rail work of this nature requires periods of around-the-clock work to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete.”
When the crews replace the old joints with new joints, they must cut, weld and grind the rails. Then, they’ll pour concrete in the track area and set it to cure. (New concrete requires curing time before the crews can remove the work zone and streetcars and other vehicle can again operate over all traffic lanes by 5 a.m., March 6.)
The work zone restricts traffic to the curb lanes in each direction. Cyclists and motorists in each direction must share the road through the work zone. Crews will maintain access to the northbound Don Valley Parkway along the on-ramp east of the bridge.
