Starting Easter Monday, Monday, April 5, the City of Toronto is closing:
- Queen Street West between Roncesvalles Avenue / King Street West and west of Triller Avenue and
- Roncesvalles Avenue between south of Grafton Avenue and The Queensway / Queen Street West
to all traffic to accommodate the next phase of the City /TTC ongoing project to replace the streetcar tracks and improve the street infrastructure
- at the intersection of Queen Street West / King Street West / The Queensway / Roncesvalles Avenue.
During this next phase of construction, east-west traffic can only pass through the intersection along Queensway and King West. The work zones block north-south through traffic.
Since Sunday, January 3, the TTC has replaced streetcars with buses along the 301 / 501 Queen and 304 / 504A King routes. Starting April 5, the TTC further revises service.
It’s detouring buses along these routes:
It’s cancelling temporary shuttle-bus service along these routes:
It’s splitting 304 / 504 King services into two:
- 304G King (Dundas W Stn - Roncesvalles Carhouse);
- 304Q King (Triller - Princes’ Gate);
- 504G King (Dundas W Stn - Roncesvalles Carhouse); and
- 304Q King (Triller - Princes’ Gate).
The City is partially closing the intersection of Queen Street West / King Street West / The Queensway / Roncesvalles Avenue as late as until November 23, as part of co-ordinated efforts by the City and TTC to upgrade various infrastructure in the area.
Crews mainly work Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. (and, occasionally, evenings and weekends, when necessary) “until August 2022”, meaning as late as until August 31, 2022.
TTC crews continue to remove the overhead streetcar wiring at and near the intersection overnight Mondays to Fridays, from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m., with longer hours, when necessary, “until early April, meaning as late as until April 10.
Also, expect periods of 24-hour construction until June, when TTC crews install new rail.
For pedestrians
You can generally continue to use most sidewalks in the work zone.
However, the City is closing the sidewalk on the north side of The Queensway (between Glendale and Roncesvalles Avenues) during Stage 1. It is setting up barriers and postings signs to direct you to a safe alternate path.
If you wish to cross at the Queen West / King West / Queensway / Roncesvalles intersection, note that:
- The crosswalk on the north side is further north on Roncesvalles;
- The crosswalk on the east side is further east on Queen West;
- The crosswalk on the south side is further south on King West. The City is installing a temporary traffic-control signal at this location to ensure your safety.
For cyclists
You can generally proceed through the Queen West / King West / Queensway / Roncesvalles intersection along lanes that you share with motorists. If you wish to travel east-west through the intersection, you can share the east-west connection along Queensway and King Street. You can also opt to dismount and walk your bikes along sidewalks and crosswalks near the intersection.
If you wish to travel:
- southward along Roncesvalles: dismount north of the intersection and walk your bike along the sidewalk.
- westward along Queen: dismount at Triller Avenue and walk your bike along the sidewalk.
- northward along Sunnyside Avenue from Queensway: dismount and walk your bike along the sidewalk, or detour along Glendale Avenue.
For motorists
Until July 21, road users can only travel east-west along The Queensway and King Street West. From July 22 until November 23 road users can travel east-west along The Queensway and Queen Street West.
During this phase of construction, road users have no access:
- north- or southbound along Roncesvalles to / from Queen West, King West and Queensway;
- westbound on Queen at Triller Avenue;
- eastbound to Queen from Queensway;
- to Sunnyside Avenue from Queensway; (Southbound road users can turn left and right from Sunnyside to Queensway.)
- to Claude Avenue from eastbound Queensway; and
- to eastbound Queensway from Claude.
The City is modifying the traffic-signal timing / phasing at Queensway and Glendale Avenue to improve traffic flow during construction.
