No subway service, Sheppard West to Wilson: April 26 to May 5 May 6 (Ten 11-day closure)

Update — Tuesday, May 3, 12:06 p.m.: The TTC is extending the closure for one more day — until Thursday, May 6. Regular service resumes Friday, May 7.

(*Update — Tuesday, May 3, 12:06 p.m.) For ten 11 days — from Monday, April 26 until Wednesday, May 5 Thursday, May 6 — the TTC is closing the Line 1 Yonge - University subway between Sheppard West and Wilson stations. Line 1 subway trains operate only between Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Sheppard West stations and between Wilson and Finch stations those days.

Shuttle buses partly replace subway service between the two stations. The TTC says that all shuttle buses are accessible and operate every 60 seconds or better during the morning rush hours to provide safe travel and to keep the number of passengers aboard vehicles as few as possible.

(Or, consider a shuttle bus alternative.)

Since fewer passengers are riding the subway due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TTC is using the opportunity to improve its essential systems and reduce passenger inconvenience in the longer term. During the most recent 10-day Line 1 closure, TTC crews significantly advanced electrical work, upgraded traction power, removed asbestos and improved station floors and platforms.

The transit agency says that this ten-day closure eliminates several years’ worth of early access, weekend and platform closures. The TTC successfully used similar closures

to complete more than the equivalent of two years of work in just ten days.

Although shuttle buses are accessible, Wheel-Trans service is also available at the two stations. Ask TTC staff in each station for information about Wheel-Trans service.

To remind passengers that masks are mandatory aboard its vehicles, the TTC is distributing free masks at both Sheppard West and Wilson stations during the closure.

Shuttle buses

(The TTC has not confirmed routing information. We’ve based this section of the post on information it and third-party sources [such as TransSee]) have provided on previous occasions when this section of the subway has been closed.)

From Monday, April 26 until Wednesday, May 5, southbound buses start their trips in Sheppard West Station terminal, then proceed:

westward along Sheppard Avenue West;
southward along William R. Allen Road; and then
west- and southward along Transit Road into Wilson Station bus terminal,
ending their trips.

Northbound buses start their trips in Wilson Station bus terminal, then proceed:

north- and eastward along Transit;
northward along Allen Road; and then
eastward into Sheppard West Station bus terminal,
ending their trips.

Shuttle-bus alternatives

One way that you can reduce the impact of the closure is by planning ahead, leaving earlier than usually and giving yourself more time to get to where you’re going.

Although shuttle buses replacing subway service will be frequent, they may also be crowded.

Regular TTC buses and streetcars provide less frequent, less direct, but, perhaps, less stressful alternatives.

Consider boarding buses and street cars at subway stations on the Yonge branch of the subway line, instead of the University branch. If you’re travelling from the west, keep riding your bus or streetcar until you reach a Yonge-branch station, instead of exiting at a University-branch station. This applies not just to the closed section of the subway, but to stations north and south of the closure, so you can avoid the University branch entirely.

North of the closed section of the subway, ride:

  • buses along the 60 Steeles West or 960 Steeles West express routes to Finch Station, instead of Pioneer Village Station.
  • buses along the 36 Finch West or 939 Finch express routes to Finch Station, instead of Finch West Station.

At the closed section of the subway, ride:

  • buses along the 84 Sheppard West or 984 Sheppard West express routes to Sheppard - Yonge Station, instead of Sheppard West Station; and
  • buses along the 96 Wilson, 165 Weston Rd North or 996 Wilson express routes to York Mills Station, instead of Wilson Station.

South of the closed section of the subway, ride:

  • buses along the 52 Lawrence West or 952 Lawrence West express routes to Lawrence Station, instead of Lawrence West Station.
  • buses along the 14 Glencairn route to Davisville Station, instead of Glencairn Station;
  • buses along the 32 Eglinton West route to Eglinton Station, instead of Eglinton West Station;
  • streetcars along the 512 St Clair route to St Clair Station, instead of St Clair West Station;
  • buses along the 127 Davenport route to Spadina Station (to connect with Line 2), instead of Dupont Station; or
  • buses along the 26 Dupont route to St George Station (to connect with Line 2), instead of Dupont Station.
  • subway trains along Line 2 Bloor - Danforth to Yonge Station, instead of St George Station;
  • buses and streetcars along the 506 Carlton route to College Station, instead of Queen’s Park Station;
  • streetcars along the 505 Dundas route to Dundas Station, instead of St Patrick Station;
  • buses and streetcars along the 501 Queen route to Queen Station, instead of Osgoode Station; or
  • streetcars along the 504A / 504B King route to King Station, instead of St Andrew Station.
