No subway service, May 8, 9: Lawrence to St Clair

2021 - 05-08 - Sheppard - Yonge to St Clair.jpg

The TTC is closing part of Line 1 Yonge - University subway between Lawrence and St Clair stations all day Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9. (It’s also closing the line between Sheppard - Yonge and Lawrence stations before noon Saturday.) Line 1 trains operate only between Finch and Sheppard - Yonge stations and between St Clair and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre stations before noon Saturday. They operate only between Finch and Lawrence stations and between St Clair and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre stations after noon Saturday and all day Sunday.

Frequent shuttle buses partly replace the trains, stopping in subway station bus terminals or on the street near each station of the closed section of the line.

(Or, consider a shuttle-bus alternative.)

While this section of Line 1 is closed, Metrolinx contractors continue working on the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit.

All stations remain open so you can pay fares or connect with TTC buses and streetcars.

According to a TTC news release, “While the TTC does most subway maintenance at the conclusion of service each night, it continues to require weekend and early weeknight closures to complete critical infrastructure and [signal] upgrades.”

Although shuttle buses are accessible, Wheel-Trans is also available for each station. Since Lawrence Station is not yet accessible, if you’re travelling southbound along Line 1 towards Lawrence Station and you need an elevator, then exit the train at York Mills Station and ask any TTC customer-service staff member for Wheel-Trans.

The TTC is closing this section of Line 1 once more in May:

  • Saturday, May 15 and Sunday, May 16 - Sheppard - Yonge to St Clair - maintenance.

Shuttle buses

(We’ve based this part of the post available from TransSee during a previous closure of this section of Line 1. TransSee is a web application that provides real-time bus tracking and predicts the location of the next vehicles at a stop.)

Shuttle-bus alternatives

Plan your trips on the subway ahead of time late evenings this week to avoid stress. Leave extra time in your schedule and expect longer traveling times after 11 p.m.

While shuttle buses operate frequently, they may be crowded.

Regular TTC buses and streetcars provide less frequent, less direct, but, perhaps, less stressful alternatives. Consider travelling along the University branch, instead of the Yonge branch, to and from downtown Toronto and avoid the shuttle buses entirely.

Ride buses or streetcars on routes serving streets north or south of the closure to reach stations on the University branch.
