Streetcars return to Gerrard Street East and Main Street, starting May 9



Update — Tuesday, May 25, 10:41 p.m.: The City has announced that the damage to the sewer is more extensive than it originally estimated. Emergency sewer repairs and the resulting TTC detours continue “for approximately one month” (from the start of the repair project), meaning as late as until June 7.


Update — Tuesday, May 18, 3:32 p.m.: Water-main repairs on Bay Street and the resulting TTC detours continue until May 26.


Update — Friday, May 14, 1:05 p.m.: The TTC is further revising the detour routing due to emergency water-main repairs on Bay Street, starting 7 p.m. Friday, May 14. Water-main repairs on Bay and the resulting TTC detours continue until May 19.


Starting Sunday, May 9, the TTC is resuming streetcar service along the entire 306 Carlton overnight and 506 Carlton routes.

Since Sunday, January 3, the transit agency has replaced streetcars with buses along the route east of Broadview Avenue due to several construction projects, including:

The City of Toronto continues repairing a sinkhole that appeared in the intersection of College Street with St George and Beverley Streets last March, so streetcars continue to detour along Dundas Street West. Shuttle buses continue to replace the cars between Spadina Avenue and McCaul Street.

(Updated — Friday, May 14, 1:05 p.m.) (Updated — Tuesday, May 18, 3:32 p.m.) Starting From Sunday, May 9 until 4 a.m. Wednesday, May 19 until 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, streetcars again operate beyond Broadview Avenue along Gerrard Street East and Main Street to and from Main Street Station.

They continue to detour around the sinkhole in the intersection of College Street with St. George and Beverley Streets.

Eastbound cars operate along their regular route to College Street and Spadina Avenue, then detour:

southward along Spadina;
eastward along Dundas Street West; and then
northward along Bay Street to College,
resuming their regular route northward along College.

Eastbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on College Street at Beverley and McCaul Streets, University Avenue and Elizabeth and Bay Streets.

Instead, eastbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Spadina Avenue beyond College and Nassau Streets,
  • on Dundas Street West at Huron, Beverley and McCaul Streets and University Avenue and Chestnut and Bay Streets and
  • on Bay Street at Elm Street, Gerrard Street West and College Street.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Spadina Avenue and Bay Street. Eastbound streetcar passengers may transfer to eastbound buses on College Street at Spadina Avenue.

Westbound cars reverse the eastbound detour routing.

Westbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on College Street at Elizabeth Street and University Avenue, across from McCaul Street and at St. George Street and Spadina Avenue.

Instead, westbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Bay Street at Gerrard Street West, Elm Street and Dundas Street West,
  • on Dundas Street West at Chestnut Street, University Avenue, McCaul and Beverley Streets and Spadina Avenue and
  • on Spadina Avenue beyond Dundas Street West and across from Nassau Street.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Bay Streeet and Spadina Avenue. Westbound streetcar passengers may transfer to westbound buses at stops on Carlton and College Streets between Church and Bay Streets.

Eastbound buses start their trips on Spadina Avenue north of College Street, then proceed:

southward along Spadina;
eastward along Dundas Street West;
northward along McCaul Street; and then
eastward along College and Carlton Streets to Jarvis Street,
ending their trips.

Eastbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on Spadina Avenue beyond Spadina Avenue and Nassau Street,
  • on Dundas Street West at Huron, Beverley and McCaul Streets,
  • on College Street at University Avenue and Elizabeth, Bay and Yonge Streets and
  • on Carlton Street at Church and Jarvis Streets.

Eastbound bus passengers may transfer to eastbound streetcars at stops on College and Carlton Streets between Bay and Jarvis Streets.

Westbound buses start their trips eastbound on Carlton Street at Jarvis Street, then proceed:

southward along Jarvis;
westward along Gerrard Street West;
northward along Church Street;
westward along Carlton and College Streets;
southward along McCaul Street;
westward along Dundas Street West;
northward along Spadina Avenue;
around Spadina Crescent; and then
southward along Spadina Avenue to College,
ending their trips.

Westbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on Carlton Street at Yonge Street,
  • on College Street at Bay and Elizabeth Streets and University Avenue,
  • on Dundas Street West at Beverley and Huron Streets and Spadina Avenue and
  • on Spadina Avenue beyond Dundas Street West, across from Nassau Street and beyond College Street.

Westbound bus passengers may transfer to westbound streetcars on Spadina Avenue at College Street.
