The City of Toronto and the TTC are co-ordinating several construction projects to upgrade infrastructure
- on Queen Street West between Fennings and Bay Streets.
(Fennings Street is one block east of Dovercourt Road.)
Projects include:
- replacing the streetcar tracks between Fennings and Bay Streets;
- replacing the streetcar tracks at the intersection of Queen Street West with Shaw Street;
- replacing the water main and the City-owned portion of substandard water services between University Avenue and Bay Street; and
- improving the streetscape on Queen Street West between Spadina Avenue and McCaul Street, in partnership with the Queen Street West Business Improvement Area.
To reduce the impact of construction on local businesses and residents, the City and TTC will sequence construction work to take place in smaller work zones of about 300 metres each. Crews start working at Bay Street and continue working westward along Queen West toward Spadina Avenue (June until August). They then start working from Fennings Street eastward towards Spadina (August until December). Each work zone blocks access to vehicles for as long as four weeks to allow crews to complete the work more quickly.
Since Sunday, May 9, the TTC has detoured streetcars along these routes, to accommodate these major construction projects:
Shuttle buses replace streetcars east of Queen Street East / Parliament Street. The buses operate along three routes.
- 301L Queen / Long Branch overnight shuttle buses;
- 501L Queen / Long Branch shuttle buses; and
- 501H Queen / Humber shuttle buses.
The ongoing construction project at the intersection of Queen Street West / King Street West / The Queensway / Roncesvalles Avenue also continues to affect service along the routes.
The TTC may also have to further detour buses around some of the work zones along parallel streets, when necessary. It will revise these detours as the projects progress. It will also maintain regular service along north-south routes crossing Queen Street West as best as possible. However, expect it to detour buses and streetcars along these routes around work zones, when necessary.
Infrastructure construction on Queen Street West between Fennings and Bay streets continues “until December”, meaning as late as until December 31.
Crews work on this project 24 hours a day seven days a week. They conduct excavation and heavy breaking during various times throughout the day. However, they only break concrete from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. each day. Concrete-breaking is the most disruptive activity, but typically takes place during the first two to three days for each phase of the construction.
Expect periods of 24 hour operations (overnight activities) by TTC crews when they install new rail. The TTC says, “Around-the-clock work during rail installation is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail, concrete and to support the progress of the daytime activity. Overnight rail work by TTC may consist of moving new rail into position, rail installation and rail welding / grinding.”
Since “the week of” Tuesday, May 25, crews have been storing and welding rail in the track area of Queen Street West between York and Bay Streets to prepare for phases one to four of this project.
Since Monday, May 31, crews have been storing and welding rail in the track area of Queen Street West beside Trinity - Bellwoods Park to prepare for phases five to eight of this project.
