Starting Monday, June 14, TTC passengers travelling aboard buses along the 102 Markham RD and 902 Markham Rd express routes have access to free public Wi-Fi.
The initiative is part of a larger City of Toronto program to prioritize and provide Wi-Fi access to Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (NIAs) in the city. The TTC and City chose routes along Jane Street and Markham Road due to their popularity and service to key NIAs. The TTC introduced free public Wi-Fi access along the 35 Jane, 335 Jane overnight and 935 Jane express routes, starting Monday, May 31.
This is the second phase of a six-month pilot project that will allow the TTC to evaluate a variety of Wi-Fi service models and gather passenger feedback. The pilot will help to inform the request for proposals for a fully managed passenger Wi-Fi network on buses and streetcars, which the City and TTC will issue later this year.
Wi-Fi-enabled buses feature decals informing passengers that on-board access is available. You’ll have to log-in and accept the terms of service to access the Internet and browse the web, check e-mails, social media, or other low-bandwidth activities. The pilot project does not support activities that require a continuous high bandwidth connection, such as streaming movies or downloading large files.
You may also notice Wi-Fi-enabled buses along other routes during the pilot. You can take advantage of the on-board Wi-Fi, whenever it is available.
