City closing Gardiner Expressway, affect GO bus service, July 9, 10, 11, 12



From 11 p.m. Friday, July 9 until 5 a.m. Monday, July 12, the City of Toronto is closing:

  • the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway between Highway 427 and Carlaw Avenue

for the annual maintenance program.

GO Transit is detouring buses along these routes, while the expressway is closed:

  • 16 Hamilton / Toronto express;
  • 18 Lakeshore West;
  • 21 Milton / Toronto;
  • 31 Guelph / Georgetown / Toronto;
  • 61 Richmond Hill / Toronto;
  • 65 East Gwillimbury / Newmarket / Toronto;
  • 68D Barrie / Toronto express;
  • 71 Stouffville / Toronto; and
  • 90 Lakeshore East.

Although the maintenance project does not directly affect TTC services, closing the expressway likely results in major congestion along nearby and parallel streets, as motorists seek alternate routes. Passengers aboard buses and streetcars along these streets can expect delays:

While the expressway is closed, City crews are:

  • milling and paving 15 lane kilometres of roadway, including 11,000 tonnes of asphalt;
  • marking lines;
  • inspecting, maintaining and replacing overhead and ground signs;
  • repairing potholes and sealing cracks;
  • mechanically sweeping and removing debris;
  • removing graffiti;
  • flushing and cleaning catch basins;
  • inspecting and chipping bridges;
  • flushing bridge joints;
  • inspecting, repairing and replacing crash-attenuation systems that help cushion and redirect vehicles from barricades and barriers;
  • inspecting, repairing and relamping street lights;
  • replacing and repairing hydro poles;
  • inspecting and repairing traffic cameras; and
  • repairing or replacing guardrails.

68D Barrie / Toronto express

From 11 p.m. Friday, July 9 until 9 a.m. Saturday, July 10, buses continue to operate to and from Union Station Bus Terminal, GO is likely detouring the buses along Lake Shore Boulevard East, instead of the Gardiner, but the buses serve all regular stops. However, GO Transit Control monitors road conditions and may direct bus drivers to detour along other streets, depending on traffic flow.

From 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11, southbound buses operate along their regular route to Highways 404 and 407, then detour:

westward along Highway 407;
southward along Jane Street; and then
westward into Highway 407 Station bus terminal,
ending their trips.

You can transfer to the TTC’s Line 1 Yonge - University subway to travel toward Union Station. PRESTO fare-card users must tap their cards when boarding exiting the GO bus - you don’t have to tap on the TTC. At Highway 407 Station, they system will automatically deduct your fare to Union from your account.

Northbound buses reverse the southbound detour routing.

When entering the TTC at Union Station, show your PRESTO card or GO ticket at the booth.

GO is assigning extra staff to Highway 407 and Union stations to help provide information and directions.

westward along Queen Street East to Port Credit GO Station bus terminal,
ending their trips.

Transfer to trains along the 01 Lakeshore West line to travel between Port Credit and Union Station.

Westbound buses start their trips in Port Credit GO Station bus terminal, then proceed:

westward along Queen Street East;
southward along Elizabeth Street;
eastward along Park Street East;
northward along Hurontario Street; and then
eastward along the Queen Elizabeth Way to Highway 427,
