Friday, July 30, TTC track crews start a project to repair the streetcar tracks
- on Bathurst Street, south of College Street.
Crews work only in the streetcar right-of-way to:
- saw cut, mill and break concrete to expose the old rail;
- replace the old rail with new rail; and
- place new concrete.
Starting 11 p.m. Saturday, July 31, the TTC is replacing streetcars with buses along the 511 Bathurst route north of Queen Street West to accommodate the project.
Track repairs on Bathurst south of College continue until August 2 (4 a.m.). However, the TTC service changes continue only until August 1 (7 a.m.).
By 7 a.m. Friday, July 30, the track crew starts setting up the work zone and cutting into the concrete. They also mill the concrete to expose the old rail. During the concrete-milling and -breaking process, the TTC maintains streetcar service through the work zone. Some concrete-breaking may continue Saturday, July 31 morning to completely expose the rail so crews can remove and replace it.
The TTC says, “While most work typically ends at 11 p.m., rail work of this nature requires periods of around-the-clock work to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete.”
When crews replace the old rail with new rail, they also cut, weld and grind the new rail. They’ll pour concrete in the track area and set it to cure. The new concrete requires curing time before crews can remove the work zone so that all traffic can again flow over the track area by 4 a.m. Monday, August 2.
The work zone restricts traffic to the curb lanes. The City of Toronto is temporarily prohibiting on-street parking near the work zone to maintain traffic flow. The work zone may also block motorists from turning left onto or off of Bathurst Street.
